Is there any reason not to ?

Nothing wrong at all. I have used a Holosite on top of my 870 for slug hunting and it works well.

There are two disadvantages. The first is that you may like the Holosite so much that you'll never go back to irons. The second is that people at the range will take notice and hang around you hoping that you will let them try it. ;)

It's essential on a pistol gripped only shotgun (red dot)and extremely usedful on turkey or deer guns or anything that will be used on ground targets. about flying targets like Skeet & trap, i don't know much about, but I can't see a red dot hurting.

also second what Calybuster said

What makes a great mount is the weaver convert-a-mount system. The base stays on the gun so you can use high or low top brackets with a scope or holosight. Once you have them zeroed you just change over with 2 thumb screws and your ready to shoot again with different optics on the same gun. One gun for many uses. I like the sound of that!!!::rolleyes:

When you purchase a gun, or have a gun built, at some point in the process - beyond simply wanting it - you must ask yourself, "What is it for?" Sometimes, as a project proceeds, it is possible to loose sight of the original goal. That does not appear to be the case here. Nice gun!

Please send a pic when you have it together as that is almost exactly the finished system I want to build. (Rem 870/12.5/553 sight/Drilled and tapped mount) Any way of getting you to sell that 870?...... Mike Ps. If you wanted to just sell the wood works I would be interested in the forearm and stock.(Just love the look of your shorty)

I had an identical shotgun a while back, and mounted it with a red-dot scope. That little sucker shot Winchester 2-3/4" slugs through the same raggedy hole at 50 yards all day long! The only problem with the shorty barrel though is that it feels like you singe your eyebrows everytime you pull the trigger!:runaway:

:D I love it!! No reason not to. :D

I'm looking to put an el-cheapo red dot on my 18" 870. My setup certainly won't be as 'sweet' as yours but I'm sure it'll be a lot (shot) of fun.

Anyone know where I can get one of those mounts for my Maverick 88/Mossy 500? I had to give the one I was borrowing back. :(
