i have a old 6.5 swedish m96 the rifleing is still crisp but as far as i stick out the 142 gr matchkings and still keep neck tension they will not touch the rifling is the throut burned out and can i salvage this by shortening the chamber and getting it re chambered and re threaded. or should i get the brand new m38 barrel i got installed. it prints about 1 inch or so 5 shot with hand loads

If the bullet will not fully engrave in the lands, the throat would be considered toast but if you are still getting 1" 5 rds groups, enjoy shooting it till it will no longer group this well.

That type of accuracy from a old workhorse is nothing to worry about. Alot of new rifles would be happy to do this well :)

Because of how little shank there is infront of the chamber, setting back will not yield the results you are looking for.

Better to start with a new barrel and a shorter throat.

The M96 6.5x55 chamber was cut with a very long, tapered throat. I doubt if any pointed bullet could be loaded out far enough to touch the lands when the rifle was new. Odds are, the throat is not burned out. Those chambers seem to work real well with bullets loaded to jump a bit. Regards, Bill.

My M96 loves hornady round nose 160s shoots .5-.75 when im up to it dosent shoot pointed bullets as well there around 1-1.5moa

In my M96 I can get the 140 SMK's to touch but I back them off a bit .005 and the rifle will shoot into .75 MOA all day. It does not seem to like the 140 Accubonds but I did shoot a doe Mule deer this fall and it worked very well!!

If your rifle will shoot into 1 inch leave it alone and enjoy!!! remember these rifles were designed with combat use in mind!!! "millitary chambers" as I call it!!

Try different bullets and see what happes, what do you have to loose??? A few bullets , some powder, some primers.... Right!!!

Pm if you have any questions!!
