Is my bolt okay?

Hey all,

New to shotguns. Scored a free beater Mossberg 535 from a friend and have been trying to get it cleaned up. Disassembled the bolt today (minus the pin for the bolt lock which is sheared off inside and seized to hell). Noticed the top edge of the bolt face has a gouge/wear spot in it. Is this okay? Can I ignore or is it sketchy?

Also, can I put a torch to it to heat up the stuck pin in order to better drive it out?

If there's no cracks in the bolt that little gouge will have no effect on its strength, having said that an abused and ill cared for gun should be gone over by a good gunsmith to ensure there are no safety issues that might get missed.
 
I'm no gunsmith, but don't sweat the marks. I would not be afraid to use a propane turbo torch, but not a Oxy/Ace set! Actually, I would consider a soak in diesel to see it that helps.

Cool. I used a handheld propane torch on it but the pin wouldn't budge. I'll soak it in diesel over night and see what happens. My last resort is to try and drill it out with a drill press.
 
Search "Mossberg 500 bolt" on u toob. A guy has a very good tutorial on how to get that pin out. It needs to be hit hard with a big hammer and punch. He demonstrates a unique way to support the bolt in a vice for the heavy pounding. His name is chromefreak123.

Thanks for the suggestion. I did watch that video and have busted two punches already using his method. I think this pin is particularly stuck. Because it sheared off inside the bolt lock, the broken edges may be grabbing into the metal in the lock so I don't think more hammering with a punch is going to do it.
 
Place the locking block/bolt in your vice with a small socket on one side to allow the pin the press out. Then position a good solid piece of pin sized rod on the opposite side up against the stuck pin and let it be bound by the vice. Crank her up tight and leave it if there is no movement. Come back a little later and tighten again. Eventually the constant pressure will make the pin move. It has worked for me in the past. Seems the most stuck ones are in places where this method cannot be used. Kroil or PB Blaster would not be an bad idea too.

Man, awesome. Thank you very much for tips. I've got the bolt submerged in diesel for the night as per the suggestion above. Tomorrow I'll throw it in the vice and see what I can do.
 
Sometimes tapping the outside edge of the vice with a soft faced mallet will stir things up.
In the sloped area of the vice between the striking end of the punch and the vice handle.
 
It's got some room to move on the side you can't see. Because of the curve on the top profile of the bolt, and where the hole happens to be, I had no reliable way of securing the bolt, punch, and a socket in the vice. It wanted to "roll" and put the punch at a crazy angle in relation to the pin. Not really sure what else to do at this point but I'll see where it's at tomorrow after sitting in the vice over night.
