Is owning a .444 Marlin and a .45-70 Guide gun redundant??

Just remember to wear your steel toed boots when shooting the GS. Those 500 grain slugs everybody seems to think they need come rolling out the end of the barrel pretty slow. ;) :p
I may try a few of the 'big boys', 500gr + cast & jacketed, in the GS but I think for the most part I'll save them for the .458wm, then I don't have to consider the 'steel toe boots'.;) Actually I've just finished loading some cast 525gr LFN with GC's for the .458wm. Gonna' load another box to try using the Speer 400grFN. It's one of my jacketed bullets of choice for the .45-70 but I want to see how it performes in the .458wm.:)

If he misses with the first shot, the recoil from those heavy weight .45/70 loads will leave him too dazed and confused for a followup ;)

Could happen I guess,:) but it hasn't yet and I still have a few more years to 'plant' some serious lead. .45-70, .458wm & .500 S&W, bring it on.;)

Had fun with both and both are shooters. Therefore both are stayin.:D I find if i don't use something for a while and lose the attachment, it will be traded or sold.

Good to hear, man. ;)

I haven't read through all of this stuff and I have strong opinions on what was said. Before I get to that, what's a 45-70? And the 444 is an air rifle thing right? :slap: Oh ya right..

Well, 'everything' was all loaded up so I decided to go 'plant' a little lead this afternoon.;) I was going to make it a 'Marlin Day' and take the .44-40, .444 & .45-70 but decided to do a little load testing/'lead planting' with my 1895 GS .45-70 instead. Shot some 400gr Speers, and some cast, 325gr LFN & 420gr LFN, both with GS's. Groups were no 'screaming hell'.:( All were in the 1.5"-1.75" size A couple of people interuptions, good wind blowing and a couple of bursts of 'liquid sunshine'. That's my excuse & I'm sticking to it'. Trying my new polisher out on the brass as we speak.
Next on the agenda is to change from IMR 3031 to 303carbines suggestion of IMR 4198.

Stop mucking around and get a 50 110!

Oh yes...that's my plan as soon as I find a barrel. yes, I know I have a .510 blank in the gun closet, but I don't want to use that just yet. It may still turn into a Big Mother Gun! But a Stainless Guide Gun in 50-110 with a 20" or 22" barrel would be just the ticket. Doesn't need to be too short.

I can't remember the exact load, but it's a max load from Pet Loads with 3031. With my cast bullets (418 grains of 1:30) they leave the barrel at 1950 (28" tube on my 1885). I can't think of a reason to change.
