Is piston system worth it?

According to people who know about these things, there is only one piston system worth buying, the Hk416. And only really if you are doing a lot of full auto/suppressed.
It is the only proven system in actual serious use. All the other ones are at best proprietary, and at worst, bolt-on additions.
It is the answer to a non-existant problem, the AR system was designed as DI. If you want a piston, get a rifle that was designed from the ground up as a piston gun.
It is certainly not something you want as a first AR.
You can argue all you want that your sample of one (or maybe two) is flawless, clean, bla, bla, etc. but the experts and people who deal with bigger samples disagree. Look at who is using what, and you will see what I mean.
I believe it was Elmer Keith that said " jet engines don't have pistons, and neither do my ARs".

The AR has been functioning fine with DI for decades, especially the last 10-20 years. Only the harshest conditions and uses of these guns would yield more positive results from a gun like the HK416.
If you want it for the novelty, sure.. but for hobbyist use? Forget it, definitely pointless. You'll never shoot enough rounds fast enough to realize any benefit, if it exists at all. 5 and 10 round mags, semi auto? Why even bother..

DI platform is lighter and cheaper. DI parts are also universal, unlike piston systems.

I don't know, not getting that gas in the face all day might be worth a piston system. When we used to shoot gophers all day , back in the "good old days", you sure noticed it at the end of the day. Those "days" are coming back I hope.

So many companies have come out with piston guns now, all I can say is time will tell. HK416/417 is definitely worth it if you want HK. I have heard good things about POF too so those are the two companies I would go with in regards to piston systems.
I would love to hear more POF feedback, from guys like KevinB and what the Questar boys have to say about them though.I have herd mixed reviews about LWRC though..but that was there early guns.

Honestly there are so many AR gas piston systems out there now I've lost count, I remember going to the NRA show a couple of years ago and it seemed every manufacturer was touting their's, Ruger, SIG-Sauer, Para-Ord, POF, you name it.
For target shooting I think gas piston systems are pretty much pointless, the whole advantage of the AR-15 for target shooting is the direct gas impingement system because there is no gas piston whacking back and forth to screw up the accuracy of the gun.
If you must have one, the H&K system which is very lightweight and reliable is the best, also the Z-M weapons system which is used by Para-Ordnance is a lot more clever than the rest of them.
The only real reason I can see to have one is that it's easier to clean the rifle.
You don't have to clean a DI AR-15 after each outing. In fact you don't need to clean it period. (talking about quality AR here) Lube it, shoot it, forget about it.
Depends on the school of taught, there's an AR called Filthy 14 south of the border that has over 43 000 rounds down the pipe with one minimal cleaning at some point in time, no barrel cleaning whatsoever and proper/generous lubrication. It still shoots 1.5" groups at 50 yards and it's going to be rebuilt.

They're both DI, just higher grade. Questar's prices on LMT's are pretty hard to beat.
