is poaching real in your neck of the woods?

Earlier in this thread a nonhunter asked why a person who does not want to have their guns regulated by the government should want their game food regulated by the government. Duh, its because game needs to be protected from unchecked harvest. This may be by "stewards of the land" or others who think their personal needs are more important than sustainable harvest. Call the report-a-poacher line. You're not an azzhole, you're stopping azzholes.

My father said that I never ate beef til I was 5... I'll let that say it all. They never had any money in those days...lived in a loghouse down in the bottom of the Frenchman River Valley. Got to eat...my Grandfather died in '58, Grandma had a house of young children...Dad filled the larder.
No need for it anymore. Not much obvious around SE Alberta...I live in the country too.
A big rancher friend said he'd rather have a poacher than hunters.
"Hmmm...tracks? Wonder what that was about...gates all closed, everything as it should be..."=Poacher
"Tracks everywhere, cruised the edges of all the coulees, let the gates down and had a picnic lunch (Garbage bag trees; Tragically Hip line there)...= Hunters

Sad but true...we need to step up our image a tad

seen it a few times

hunting a clearing till last light then going back the next morning for a first light and finding 2 carcasses left in the clearing.... Hmmm that's strange they weren't here last night.

lots of other things I've seen over the last +30 years of hunting.

Only time I saw much sign of it was in 2009, around the time peoples UI would run out after the crash in 2008.

And we shouldn't have to have driver's licences either. Why the heck should government tell me I can drive or not?

While we're at it, we should probably dismantle all those useless safety regulations for airplanes too.

Good job countering an argument I wasn't making. Do you really need me to break it down in a way you can understand? Otherwise I'd rather just ignore the troll.

I personally don't have a problem with poaching. I don't believe it is the government's place to tell us whether or not we can kill an animal.

The problem I have is with unnecessary and needless killing. Killing an animal just for one or two body parts and leaving the rest is disgusting. However, killing an animal to provide meat for yourself and your family shouldn't be a crime just because you didn't give the government their due.

That is just wrong. With no game conservation laws if everyone thought like you there'd be year-round hunting of "I need to feed my family" whiners.

South west ontario is bad. We dont have much bush land left so trespassing is rampant and with that comes poaching. Its 50 bucks to buy a neck shot deer on the res. Course it might have been hanging on tele pole for a week before you buy it. Its gotten better i guess. Used to drive thru and see 10 or 12 deer rotting on poles. Now i think most of the rez population is to lazy to poach. Govt pays better and every 4th one has a smoke shop. Poaching is still an issue. Now that theyve dropped the turkey course and allowed home printed tags our turkey population has taken a serious dip. Alot of road shooters here to

It really depends on where you live whether beef is cheaper than wild meat. That is not the case in the north.

I think many of the poachers out there are just doing it to buck the system, to fill their "bad ass" attitude persona of whatever they can do against "the man" they will.

If you NEED to kill an animal to survive is much different than doing it just because you can.

I'm not buying the 'feed my family' line. Maybe sell the pickup and buy a small car, maybe shut off the internet, satellite and cable. Skip wing night at the bar. If you are that down and out , then yeah , do what you gotta do. And you better be poaching with some beat up lee enfield or a cooey instead of that $2000 rifle. Tag prices suck , but someone's gotta look after herd numbers. Once upon a time my weekly groceries came from dollarama. I still scrounged up enough for tags. I've heard people that make $50000+ a year start arguing why they should have to pay for a tag. The me , me, me world we live in is disgusting anymore. Yes , poaching is alive and well in SW Ont.

We don’t need poachers to ruin the game numbers in bc, we already have the NDP.

The Liberals cut C.O. numbers, Federal law provides constitutional rights to FN people whether you like it or not, judges make up their own minds case by case. Yours is an empty valueless argument.

The BC provincial government sets tag numbers and licenses etc. Yours is an empty valueless dipper argument. - dan
