Is SKS still a good buy?

After shooting various firearms for 20 years, I bought one last month to see what the hype was about.

Man they're fun, and cheap ammo too!

go for it.

I had 3, gave 1 to a friends son, won't part with my remaining 2, a Russian and a Yugo. Great, cheap, fun guns. Easy to look after and clean.

I have one in wood and one in tapco and ill prob get more in the not to distant future.

my last one was $220 all in from the EE.
I have a spare cash jar (coffee change, sell odds and ends on Kijiji) when ever i get enough i buy another SKS.

I have 3 Boys and my plan is to get one for each of them plus 1 or 2 for me.

They remind me of a good pick up truck. Its not ###y but you can beat the crap out of it and it still gets you home at the end of the day.

Even though prices have risen, the SKS is still a terrific value for money spent. That said, I have to swim against the current here and say that I just can't imagine why I would want another one. Had several, tried to like them but couldn't. I hadn't actually shot any of mine for so many years (no desire to) that I decided to sell them off. Kept one for use as a truck gun.

I have only used a truck gun on two occasions; on one of those occasions it was an SKS and I remember thinking "Oh, Jesus, not this thing again..."

Reliable, cheap to shoot, yep for sure...but also heavy, ugly, uncomfortable, too short for a grown-up, marginal sights. They are still definitely well worth what they cost...but the cult following that has spring up around these things is something I just don't get.

Is there a big quality gap between Russian SKS and others? I would like to find a Russian as a Cold War relic and wonder what its going to cost. Never fired one but likely as close to an AK as I will get.

The jury is still out regarding quality differences among the various countries that produced SKSs, but any differences don't amount to much.
You will be able to find a nice Russian just about anywhere, for around $250.

No, I am not talking about its performance, which will always be lacking compared to m14. I am asking if it's a good buy. So school me on whether I should go SKS, or save up for a Norinco m14.
Some buy these as cheaper hunting rifles and think they are great. Other just for fun.

I like both for fun and think the SKS would be good for deer in the bush. My buddy loves my SKS, shoots it well, and chooses it over most of my rifles when I invite him for a range trip in the bush.

I wouldn't worry about ammo down the road as they alway seem to come up with more and at least two companies make hunting rounds now. (At least I think they are for hunting, haven't looked too close. They are brass and copper.)

For the price, get an SKS while they are still pretty cheap. M305 will be there when you want it.

The stocks on the russian ones do tend to be a bit nicer then the chinese ones but they are all mechanically identical. Never had any issues with either
