Is SKS still a good buy?

i feel like there are back and forth opinions on the SKS and M14/M305? which would be nicer for 'plinking around' or shooting of under 300 yards?

They are both great for plinking out to 300 but the m14 will do the far end of that range distance much better, the 308 round is just starting to stretch it's legs around there where as the x39 is about at it's maximum ideal range.

I use my SKS and other like chambered guns to shoot steel at about 100m and do quick shooting type drills. My norc m14's don't make it out too much anymore but when they did it was always in a more precise and slower shooting style, I wasn't doing to much running and gunning with them.

All the russian and chinese SKS i bought were given to my grandkids (11 sks), for myself i bough 4X SKS Yugo 59-66 in full cosmo, i cleaned one and keeping the 3 others in cosmo, i like the sks.

Good value; great fun. Cabelas have Chinese (some would say better than Russian) for 189 right now. Been about two years since I have seen them that cheap.

SKS without a doubt - simply because the ammo is much cheaper than .308Win or 7.62x51 NATO.

I also find the SKS easier to clean. (yes, I own both)

The SKS is ridiculously easy to PROVE.

SKS > Norc M14 any day, all day.

That being said, for 200 dollars you get a functional rifle that will take any game in North America with commercial soft points, and is insanely cheap to plink with using surplus military.

Recoil is hardly noticeable, and if you want to dress it up you can.

+ Bayonet. You can't forget the bayonet.

I always forget the bayonet in the scabbard

Ill never regret buying my sks. Was my first gun. Her name is Ksenia.
ha .. love it - my babies' names Pasha, Jade, Mao - great warm up gun, plinker, lend to others when take them to the range (without cringing about scratches and dings). At 1/5 the price of a 200 yard tack driver, with cheap ammo they are fun and affordable. Take'em for what they are and they are great. Many detractors of these rifles are comparing the equivalent of a VW Bug to a Bentley,
