is target shooting .17HMR considered Precision?

which is why i said the odd goat.. if one happens to be in range and i can take a good shot which i think will drop it then i may do.. otherwise im not going to bother

we dont usually see goats in the same areas as the normal varmints. so if goat is on the menu then ill have a more suitable rifle/shotgun with me, in most cases

ever consider a 22wmr, i have a savage 93 with accutrigger and tasco 6x24 scope, i can shoot consistent minute of clay pigeon out to 150 yards, might be a better round for the varmint goats you talked of

My opinion as follows:

17hmr is the way to go.

I have two, both Savages.

One is the thumbhole laminated stock SS heavy barrel with the accutrigger. The other is a plain jane synthetic/blued that I had first but kept cause it is at least as accurate as the fancy gun.

Shooting ground squirrels, crows, magpies to 125 yds these guns simply don't miss.

Goats, If you can guarantee that you can hit them in the eye I suppose its enough gun. I personally would not take that shot.

I just picked up my model 93 in 17hmr and put a 6X18 pine ridge scope from cabela's on it. I smile every time i use it. Deadly accurate too. When I can shoot golf balls off tee's at 150 more often then not I would say that's precision.

Now if I can find a dealer who can get me the model 12 BTCSS in 22-250 in the kingston ontario area I would be a very happy man.

Cheers,

Bob

It's a good and accurate hunting round but that's about it. It is a very expensive rimfire round to target shoot with. (Heck 9mm is cheaper)

But saying that when I did have my 17hmr I did take it to the range a couple of times, and it consisantly shot around an inch at 100 yards. I'd call that precision.

go for it buddy....i promise you will love it

recoil is non existant, so you can see your hits in the scope....noise is minimal....accurate as a bugger and lots of power for small game at impressive distances...it IS a rimfire remember

bang for the buck factor is definently there....it is one of my favorite calibers of all time =]

I have a Nikon Buckmasters 6-18x40SF on my Savage 93R17. I've been very happy with it...and on still days with no wind, clays at 200 yards would be easy. Shotgun hulls at 200 yards would be a better challenge.

I love the way the .17 HMR vaporizes small varmints, and shooting it at the cabin with no ear muffs doesn't leave me deaf.
