Is the 17 HM2 worth it?

So lets recap on the *HOT NEW* 17 HM2. Correct me if I'm wrong. It has the same 17 grain bullet as the 17 HMR, but a 22 long case. What kind of powder do they put in that stuff to prevent it from being blown away by a soft breeze? At it's release, I bet fur hunters were delighted to have an even light catridge that will minimize still more fur damage, but where is that thin line between fur saving and perfomance. I think that Hornady is releasing new calibers just for the fun of it. To when the .11 Hornady Ultra Frail?

Personally I don't get this "performance rimfire" stuff if you really need to blow the dickens outa something long range, go centre fire otherwise 22lr works fine.

I have three .22lr rifles used for plinking and Rabbit/Squirrel (yes I eat both) and for long range "precision" hunting I use a Bolt action Marlin 17HMR. Its like a laser beam and difficult to screw up.
As for pelt damage- experiment with different ammunition. I find the Federal polymer tipped bullet almost explosive, while "if" I were going to save the hide then the CCI hollow point is also very accurate and has very minimal expansion. (Try both on a phone book and see for yourself.)

I don't personally see the need for a middle ground between HMR and .22 and also cannot see it lasting for more than five years or so.

Just my 0.2c's

I also see no need for the HM2. If I were to guess which one will vanish my money is on the HM2. There is just not enough to distinguish it from the 22 mag.

As far a spelt damage goes, it should be extremely minimal for the 17 Mach 2, so minimla that I would doubt it would be able to kill a Coyote ( or even get his attention). A .17 Rem or any of the .22 Centerfire rounds is a more resposible choice. As for Gophers, I gave up on .22 LR and went to a .22 Hornet because the wind drift, drop and lack of energy were lacking after 50 yards. The only .22 LR bullet I use on Gophers now is the CCI Velocitor, and only at the 50- 75 yard range. The 17 Mach 2 really seems to be filling a niche that doesn't need to be filled.

At least it will be easier to form cases and get .17 cal bullets after it fades into oblivion, it's too bad it weren't the same for the old 5mm Remington Magnum.

There was an extensive article in the May Shooting Times, (I think, maybe another mag?) on the Hornady Mach 2. It is on 22LR hyper-velocity cases which are longer than 22LR, very near 17HMR vel. & HALF THE PRICE of the mags. HM2 works in L-LR actions, is quieter, & maybe more accurate, according to the article, worth checking out.
Personally, we have 7 22LR & find target vel. amo the best, solids for little destruction & Remington Subsonic HP if anchoring a critter is paramount.

What he said :)

I was surprised how quiet the M2 was compared to the HMR. very accurate and ammo was cheaper. what about that is useless? if anything It fills the gap for those looking for more power then a .22LR but less "crack" then the HMR at similar ranges. I asure you within 80yrd the gophers don't know the diff.

I bet you could probably stretch that out to 100. If the price was closer to $5 a box I would consider adding it to my HMR, But @ $8 I am hard to convince.

But marlin is comming out with a semi-auto M2 an article was saying .5" @ 50 with a semi-auto that is not too expensive (as opposed to a tricked out 10/22 and match 22 ammo is not that cheap anyway)... I could be convinced

I shoot .22LR because it is the cheapest and gets the job done. I live on a farm and have to get rid of around 1000 + gophers per spring. Also there is other critters that have to be gottin rid of, not to mention plinking for fun. Just can`t see paying that extra money for ammo. The animals don`t know the difference
