Is the 17 Mach II gone?

I really like the idea of owning one, I love shooting rimfires but when one dealer stocks regularly in all Canada I'm having a hard time convincing myself to buy one. The CZ 452 in one would be a nice rifle. I never did see why it faded and the HMR stayed. I can shoot a .204 for close to the cost of the HMR, well a bit more but waay more splatter effect.

Cheers!!

I will never tire of the M2-even though it's hard to get people over the HMR-they just have to shoot it to believe it. I might have to phone ontario to pick up a spare rifle for $200...

Bruce-as your friend- i'm ordering you to step away from the phone...you just might be ripe for an intervention lol.

Ps. Ask if they have any in lh ;)

Apparently it's a good round and has a loyal following but so far it's going the way of the dodo bird. I can go to Wally-world + Crappytire and get .22lr + .22WMR + .17HMR but not .17M2.

I have a feeling cz will be offering a barrel in .17m2 for their 455. No engineering req'd, they have the reamers...just add it to the catalog and inventory and their sales go up.
If you select your guns based on what ammo is in stock at walmart, you're right, it's not for you.
The last major rimfire to royaly fail was the 5mm remington and argueably better than the .22 win mag, only remington chambered it and that killed it-lack of user base. The number of guns is way higher for the hm2, so don't hold your breath waiting for it to die.

I still can't figure out why there are so many people waiting (and in some cases hoping) for the HM2 to die. And if it does, and you own a rifle chambered in it, so what? I've already fired more dollars worth of ammo than the rifle cost to begin with, and if I have another gun in the safe that doesn't get shot it won't be the end of the world either.

Expand your horizons, don't live in fear of the unknown, and never assume the worst will happen. Unless you still own both a Betamax and HD-DVD of course. Then you might want to wait a bit. ;) :)

They want it to die so they can say that the HMR is worth the extra dollars
I found they had the same accuracy so my HMR went away as I like to shoot without spending $18.99 for a box of 50. And have the same effect on gophers-heck,i even took down coyotes with my M2.

Question to all you M2 enthusiasts. I alwas wanted to try this round but don't want to have another safe queen. What would it take to convert semiauto into this round? Other than barrel, will I need to lighten or ballast bolt for rifle to cycle normally?

Another question - how is it for real hunting? I mean a kind were we eat what we kill? How much meat will be destroyed if I shoot a rabbit or grouse for example? I know it was designed as varmint round, my guess is most amoo is violent expansion/desintegration type, right?

Less bang for more buck....

How do figure more buck?Ammunition for the 17mach2 costs half as much as ammunition for the 17HMR.

I wouldn't shoot grouse or rabbits in the body with either a 17mach2, or a 22lr. With head shots, no meat is lost.

well, under 50m it totally guts a gopher-so if it was something you wanted to eat then I'd say with it's accuracy...and if you can SHOOT-no problem cause you can take head shots!!

Yep, I confirmed it yesterday. The 17 mach2 in my Marlin 717 semi really blew the gophers up. I love those red tipped daggers! I shot a lot of gophers with 22lr stingers and yellow jackets and they just don't compare to the 17 mach 2 for damage. I have never had a jam or ftf with that gun. A bore snake down the pipe a few times and a drop of oil in the action and it keeps on humming.

You mean it hits harder than a stinger?!? Didn't the wind blow it about 17ft off the target at 50yrds? ;)

Well, I'll put another two cents worth in here. I just bought another carton of 17 HM2 shells for $70 or $7.00 a box. That is probably less than the price of .22 Long Rifle Target ammo.

While I will not give up the .22 LR for out Manitoba Gopher shooting, I also carry the .17 HM2 for those longer shots and if the opportunity presents, larger varmints. Lately, a very large Raccoon succumbed to one of those little slugs at over 100 yards: one shot and he rolled over with tail twitching and all four feet in the air.

While I find the ammo is not Wally-mart available, it can be obtained at a local gun shop, and seems quite popular. I bought a Marlin at about $100 off the list price because it was new-in-box and I wanted to give the round a try. The performance is impressive for such an apparently miniscule cartridge, and I intend to keep the Marlin. That says it all.

Just fooling around looking at rifles I noticed alot of maufacturers dropped the HM2 in different models or altogether. It doesn't look like Savage even offers a single model anymore.

http://www.savagearms.com/firearms/models

Nothing by Browning or Ruger from what I see either. Marlin offers #### all anymore including no HM2.

I followed your link, then clicked 'rimfire', then 'Mark II series', after that I had 18 models to choose from, I picked the Mark II FV as a try, Bing! 2 calibers to choose from: 22lr or 17M2. Turns out only the synthetic stocked rifles, right handed, are made in 17HM2

If you can't find a 17mach2 it's easy to make one by purchasing a used Ruger 77/22 and a Green Mountain barrel in 17mach2. I had mine installed and ready to shoot in under an hour. I have a very accurate 17HMR, but my favorite gopher cartridge will likely always be the 17mach2.

I phoned Savage but they wouldn't make me a .17M2 TRR rifle....just the 2 they offer in the catalog-so I guess I have to buy one with the standard barrel and the accutrigger and make my own.:(

Naw, you need to buy my 77/17 in 17mach2 listed in the EE instead.:D
