is the 3006 dead?

I recently did some load development for my brother. I was pretty impressed with the data, 165 SST at 2840 from a 20" bbl and we stopped well under max. I think it's a fine cartridge, just a bit boring when compared to others.

Two thoughts to add. First, the '06 has held its popularity despite the advent of the .270, birth of the .308, and introduction of the 7mm RM and .300 WM. That's a lot of heady competition. Earlier the .303 was mentioned. Not many new rifles being chambered for the .303. But new .30-06s are still crossing the counter 115 years on, in all actions, configurations, and price ranges. Similarly, ammo choices are nearly endless and still widening.

Second, the .30-06 is constantly "reinventing itself" with better powders and bullets, and excellent quality rifles are being produced for it. Using the new rifle sales measurement, we will probably be seeing a lot of Springfields even after the 6.5 excitement dies down somewhat. Its secret? It's still a good compromise.
