Is the 6.5x55 a good long range choice?

6.5x55 is much better choice for long range than 308, an edge over 260 rem. I have several rifles in 6.5X55, one in mauser 98 with a sporter varmint barrel, the other are tikka Varmint. it a perfect caliber out to 1000 meter in my opinion...

You are just looking in the wrong shooting disciplines.

The 6.5 dominates many levels of LR shooting and is pretty much the top choice in F class (OPEN)

The 6.5X55 Swede is a great cartridge and will do very well for you.

I use a 6.5 Mystic (260improved variant) cause I prefer to use 308 brass. Fits my bolt heads easily (as will the Swede in many cases too) and easier to find brass.

Otherwise, they are near identical in performance and give up little to the 6.5X284 in velocity. However, both give much better barrel life.

Gunboy how does your Mauser shoot ? I'm a mauser fan but you hear so little about precision mausers. Did you d much to it ? Got any pictures ?

The Mauser shoot better than the NEW Tikka VArmint in 6.5X55SM, it does a hold smaller than a dime at 150meter, and at 300meter I got it to shoot a quarter size, I am very happy with the rifles, I got it from Blair at Lock and load in Edmonton as an action_Barrel 27" 1in8 I believe, Put on a boyer stock bedded and finish it myself, Though about selling it, but over the year, I end up keeping it...
