Is the 7,62x39 ELK capable ?

i have to remember some here that in siberia not everybody is using the 7.62x54r and so the 7.62x39 is used a lot for red deer, moose, maral (elk eurasian version), siberian roe deer, wild boar and bear.

in knowing your limitations and the caliber ones a lot can be done.

some here did not believe a 7.62x39 can take a moose up to the time they did it.
 
We were spitballing shooting called moose with 150s and the 7.62x39 527 when I lived up north but never tried it. With a 338, 7mm, 348, 303 and 270 etc etc etc in the safe didn’t make much sense as anything but a stunt.

I’m sure lots of elk have fallen to a 30/30 and many “ bolshoi maral!” to the 7.62x39, some of them probably even do it and get found.

I’m not much for messing around with animals lives, I’m not starving and better options are on the table

I’ll leave it to the Aussie elk hunters for now, they don’t seem too bothered when they don’t find something

No, its a long time between shots here, so the novelty of the 762 toten aussie elk hunter is real

its awesomely interestly weird to hear so many of these kind of discussions online an where they get too......... i understand context can get taken out of proportions an such, i personally just find it most intriguing from exprtirnces tlking to peole, reading ALOT online almost daily, an going an putting some of these myths to slight test .

i did a video about australias culture to big guns, its been interesting!
this is where my interest has come from to use "little guns" on our Sambar...... i love my 7-08 for them.

i agree with ya, an find it hard that others cant sort of get it but, you know yourself, theres deer Hunting, an theres Hunting deer............. yeah.

Lots of Moose and Elk get killed every year in Canada with the diminutive 30-30Win, loaded with factory fodder right out to 200yds.

Privi SP bullets have pretty thick/tough jackets and very likely, just like some of your experiments with the 7.62x39, mbogo has loaded those 123gr bullets up to velocities that are well beyond what most books will show. He knows his stuff.

As long as that bullet went into the proper spot, which should be relatively easy at 75 yards, IMHO that bullet likely had more than enough energy transfer to cleanly take a large game animal such as a Moose.

It most certainly wouldn't be my first choice but if I were hunting out of a blind or tree stand, in limited ranging conditions?????
 
The same people who say a x39 will bounce off an elk will also spout things like the 30-30 has killed more game in NA than any other other cartridges combined.

Like always, know your limits and place your shots….
 
I know lots of 303 elk hunters but I’ve never met a 30/30 elk hunter. Maybe I haven’t spent enough time in elk country :dancingbanana:

Should I keep my 527 as an elk rifle? Or sell my 338 and buy a win 94? Maybe I should ask on an Aussie forum
