I got to try a BT99 when I took my first trap shooting lesson, and I did very well with it. Was thinking of buying one for myself, but I ended up buying a Citori Crossover target as it gave me a little more versatility in case I wanted to try skeet/sporting clays as well.
Is the BT99 still a solid choice for new shooters?

So I'm thinking of buying a bt-99 as a dedicated trap gun. Any thoughts on difference between the bt-99 with adjustable comb/butt plate vs the bt-99 plus? Major difference seems to be the high rib on the plus, not sure how much difference that will make for me.

If I was spending the money I would go with the BT99 Plus. But that's just me. Some people don't like the high rib at all. That's really the only difference although I think the BT99 Plus has a recoil absorber of some kind. I shot with an old guy for years who shot an original BT99 Plus and it lasted forever.

There's nothing wrong with the Bt99 or Bt99 Plus, it's more about what you like shooting and/or shoot better. I'm not really a high rib guy but on a dedicated trap gun it's ok. I'd recommend trying out both models before buying and getting the adjustable comb and butt is a good move unless the gun fits perfectly without them.
If you have your mind set on a dedicated trap gun then fine but I just have trouble recommending a Bt99 to anyone that may decide one day to shoot some of the other shotgun sports and in that case the single barrel doesn't work!

Thanks, unfortunately my local shops don't have the models I like in stock for me to try. I currently shoot a Citori Crossovertarget o/u with 30" barrels. I have been shooting quite inconsistently, and I understand it has to do with my technique, but I also feel my comb needs to be raised slightly (my citori does not have adjustable comb). But I remember when I was taking lessons, my instructor lent me his bt99 and I shot quite well with it.

Some cardboard and tape are a good way to see If a higher comb will do the trick and you can add or remove it, Just my two loonies. Or if you look on Amazon they have a slide on comb riser I'm going to try.

If you shot well with the Bt99 then you can shoot well with the Citori once it's fitted properly. Maybe your money would be better spent to have an adjustable comb put on your Citori, then at least maybe you can get it to fit you without shelling out $3k for a new gun.
I need an excuse to buy a new gun anyways. The citori does not fit me well, only half the buttpad is on my shoulder and I'm leaning my head to the right.

Manual doesn't mention it, but the specs say drop at heel is 2" and is adjustable. I would prefer to buy the BT-99 plus over the plain BT-99 adjustable comb/buttpad as I like the look of it and prefer ejectors.

Not trying to talk you out of a new gun . As a plan B you could buy an aftermarket adjustable butt pad plate for your Citori . Add a rib makes an affordable kit.
Have you patterned the Citori at all and see where your POI is with it in it's stock form? Might be a start too see where the problem is with it.

Don't know what's happening. Shot 3 rounds of high teens with my citori a few weeks ago, then shot 3 rounds of low single digits last week.
Anyways, just bought a new bt-99 plus (was tempted to buy a used bt-99 max on EE), at least I know if my scores stay low it's not the gun's fault.

If you could get an accomplished trap shooter to stand behind you and watch you shoot, I think they could help you. There has to be a fundamental problem, which should be easy to diagnose.Don't know what's happening. Like Westward1 said, get someone who knows what they're doing to coach you and get you on the right track.
Yes, will try to take lessons again in the spring! In the meantime, will watch Leo Harris' instructional video again.
