Well,...made the fist trip to the range yesterday to zero my first Elcan.I have to admit I really like it..The FOV is superb and the glass quality is up there with the best of them,as it should be.I know from doing a few searches there are pro and con for this optical sight..For my use I think it's great!!....R....

Great to hear about this as i am about to get one for myself . Did u get the one from wolverine (the 2006)model? As i hear there s a newer model too but im not sure , with same eye relief at 1X and 4X . Any input would be apreciate .

The problem isn't with the optics itself, they are top notch. The problem is with the mount. After extended use, hard knocks, etc.. they will lose their ability to hold zero. It should be a great scope for you if it's just for range use.

To address the OP's question: no, but there are better options. The Elcan makes a great competition optic.

The older C79 scope had problems with maintaining it's zero due to the fact that we beat the s**t out of it on a regular basis due to normal training wear and tear. I don't think anyone anticipated the harsh treatment that the average soldier subjects his weapon to. The newer C79 is a lot tougher. There is a spring underneath that makes a huge difference when it comes to maintaining the zero even if you have to take it off for whatever reason. I like the C79 even though I would prefer to use a Trijicon ACOG.

For range use it will suit you just fine. Top notch glass and used ones can be had from about $500-$750. A hell of a lot cheaper than an Acog. Over time the adjustments might become somewhat mushy, but my experience is with C7's which were scoped around 94-95 IIRC, and yes, we beat the living s*&t out of them.

Don't rely on the bullet drop cam, leave the gate open and make your adjustements. The only problem is how to mark your elevation, I just use white out, and touch it up every now and then.

Th C79 wouldn't be so bad if it wasn't so darn big - it looks absolutely ridiculous on top of a C8 or C9. I am also not a fan of the BDC Cam. I like the ACOG's holdover reticle as opposed to trying to remember to adjust sights at different ranges (I have forgotten many times on the range to adjust).

I have a huge hate on for BDC's and holdover reticles. When using the Elcan and ball ammo the POI can change one or two inches at 100m from lot to lot. This translates to a 5 or 10" drop at 500m, which can easily throw you out of the running during a match. That's why I leave the gate open and mark my elevations, keeping in mind that I may have to adjust a click or two (that's what sighters are for).

When I started shopping for a personal scope I went for one that used a mil type reticle so I could come up with my own holdovers, not someone elses for a different type of ammo/barrel lenght combo.
