is the following MOSIN NAGANT a good deal?

I think it's an M91 you were looking at, not a 91/30. 91/30's don't have markings in arshins unless it's a rare early capture of a dragoon with the knovalov sight - in which case it'd be alot more than $100.

I dunno - I've seen ALOT of Russian FINN capture 91/30's with original matching bolts - perfect font match and all. I think most of the m/m bolts we see on unrefurbed wartime Mosins that aren't Finn happened during the import/export process back in the 80's when they came in - just one man's opinion.

Interesting, I would like to see one. It was my understanding that after the finns captured a rifle, they were disassembled into piles OUTDOORS:eek: ! And left there, sometimes for months untill they could be collected and rearsenaled! This exposure explains why many finned mosins have fairly serious pitting on the recievers and bolts (if the discussion warrants it, I can show some pics). I know my 2 finned mosins have parts that certainly look like they were subjected to this treatment. I also have great faith in this theory because my guns are hardcore mixmasters, with bits and pieces from every arsenal in the Union present. For example, my Westinghouse M91 has a izzy cocking piece, and Tula bolt body, restruck to match the barrel number(which, even more interestingly is different from another serial struck poorly on the hex reciever, which is also a westie, and appears to be the original one to the barrel!?). My M27 has a russian bolt that has been scrubbed and restruck on the bolt handle to match the barrel. Interestingly, it too has an Izshevsk body and Tula cocking piece. This gun has a dazzling 1928 Tikka barrel attatched to a hex reciever that looks as if it sat outside for a couple of winters, as there is evidence of fairly serious pitting along the woodline and at the rear of the reciever around the bolt hole...Meanwhile the mag and buttplate are virtually new Izzy pieces. Go figure, eh?

As an aside, what mosin manufacturer stamped thier recievers with an M-> ? It looks like the westinghouse mark(which looks like W->), but it's inverse compared to my westie...These are the guys who made the reciever on my M28.

There was an americian manufacture, possibly Westinghouse I cannot remember, who did manufacture M-N's for Russa. Don't know how many were delivered before the revolation!

That would be Westinghouse and Remington. They were contracted by the Russkies to build around 3 million M91's. The war ended before most were delivered, and many went to Russia with anti Bolshevik forces on the premise that the ammo was already available in the motherland. They left 'em behind on departure and the Russkies refurbed 'em for thier own use.

Majormarine, that M91 you're looking at sounds like a good collectors piece. If you can get it for 150, you did ok. Less would be better, and under 100 bucks would be theft:p

hey, a while back i had a local seller asking the following:

1) The Mosin Nagant M44 is a 1956 model 44 in 7.62 x 54R .This one is produced in Hungary and is of much better quality than the russian ones. it comes with sling, ammo pouch and folding chisel bayonet. accurate gun in excellent condition. $275.

I got my Hungarian M44 for $100 at a show. Wood is perfect and the edges of the crown and receiver had slight polishing with a glass shiney bore. Shoots about 2 - 3" from the bench, one of my favorite rifles!

I really like M44's :D :

...and yes, I know it's twisted and unnatural.

Just be carefull about ones thats still in the grease(or grease in the bore atleast) they can verry rough or pitted. If anyone has, or sees a tikka 91/30 in decent shape with verry good bore(no frosting, and little if any pitting) for around the $200 or so mark let me know I may be interested. The outside condition does not matter a whole lot. So far I have a tikka 91, and a polish m44. I have shot and killed some game with the 91, probably 8 deer(cwd tags lol), 5 coyotes(even one on full out run, one beded down at 250yards) and a few foxes in just a couple years.
