Why do you guys have to be dicks to the OP? I think it is you guys that are the childish ones. Making fun of him just because he asked a simple question. Tell me this, how do you know hes not planning on one day joining LA or MIL? Or maybe he trains with a holstered blue gun in his basement with his martial arts buddies and wants to practice firearm retention in a hand to hand conflict. And, even if not, what is the harm in being prepared? It is better to have and not need then need and not have. Grow up you guys. I am sure none of you own anything you may not need. Hey why even take martial arts? Lets just let the cops protect us. Tell that to the 17 year old kid that was just beaten half to death and robbed by a gang of people while walking home from a friends house in my home town. Many antis say firearms owners dont need guns because you can buy meat at the grocery store and target practice is not a good enough reason to allow citizens to own firearms. There is nothing wrong with a responsible firearms owner wanting to train for real life. Its a hobby like any other. Its so funny how people pick apart the antis on here because they dont agree with our hobby and then are doing the exact same thing to this guy. CGN is sad sometimes. People should take a lesson from their parents and "if you dont have anything nice to say then keep it to yourself" Far too many people pick others apart on this site. As I said, grow up.

Yeah, I saw the ones from the last little while. Hes learning. After I did mine I had a few questions too. Its not like the firearms laws in Canada are an easy thing to decipher. I dont know really what kind of guy he is cuz I have never met him. But, that is not the point. Everyone is intitled to their beliefs and there choices on how to train. I am just sick of people on CGN picking people apart. If he wants to train as if the world may go mad max one day that is his choice. And, I for one see nothing wrong with it as long as he is responsible with the firearms he trains with.

Yes, everyone has to learn, and everyone has questions. You're also quite right that there's no harm in training, being ready for any eventuality. That said, this SCREAMS mall ninja, which again, I don't specifically object to. I have lots of things I don't need, hell I have at least three fishing rods that have never seen a cast.
If he does indeed intend to go LE or Mil, which I'm in total favour of, he's going to need to learn to put with some abuse and justify himself. Also, to not sound like a mall ninja douche.
I agree with you for the most part except for the judgement at the end. Plus, whats worse the mall ninja or the arm chair cowboy? As said before, people are so tough and outspoken from the comfort of their own homes. I bet most would keep their mouths shut in person in most circumstances. At least half of the negative comments on this site would result in a ##### slap at very least in real life. Face to face conversations tend to go another way I find.

I agree. I generally keep my mouth shut in public, although there are times I feel the need to call someone out. I was at a martial arts school last weekend and was chatting with one of the instructors, who was going on for quite some time about gun take-away drills. I eventually had to ask if he'd ever considered what would happen if someone actually pulled the trigger while he was being fancy. He looked down at the floor and said something to the effect of 'I'd rather try something than nothing'. There's a line between hand-to-hand combat, with or without weapons/tools, and talking out of your arse.
I think the 'failing' of the OP was in the wording of the question, without any context. If it had started "so I'm planning a career in law enforcement, and something we were talking about last night at the dojo was....", I think this could have been a very responsible and informative thread. As it is, it sounds very mall-ninja, and given the proliferation of such recently, it's an easy target, like a guy at an ATM in LA in 1994...

Mall ninja questions like these do not get serious responses from me or anyone else I know. I can't even imagine the response he'd get at the local shop! LOL
I totally agree. My old martial arts instructor started the whole section on knife and firearm take away drills by warning us that trying to disarm someone with a weapon is a last ditch effort when all others are exhaused. And, even him who I watched take down 4 guys at once, including myself, who were trying to hurt him by instruction and one of which was a muscle bound competing kick boxer of about 280 pounds, without any problems had a good chance of being killed or severly injured if he tried. There "will" be blood he said I believe. "Your chances of getting out without a scratch are next to nill". "There are no happy endings in a knife or gun fight thats what you need to know" I remember thinking that if he said that being as tough and well versed in defence as he is we should all take it as gospel and remember that if ever in that situation. And, I suppose that he could have worded it better but, thats still no reason for people to be dicks.
Man, he asked for a recommendion on a holster that would retain his pistol from being taken in a hand to hand alteration. How is that a mall ninja question? Level 2 or 3 retention should have been the answer. Why should he have to explain himself. This mall ninja thing is getting out of hand. I agree that some take it over the top but, thats their choice not yours. People have the right to buy whatever products they would like to. And, train how they see fit. Why pick them apart cuz you dont agree with their opinion? What are you Hitler? As I said and my parents taught me STFU if you dont have anything positive to say! I said they were being dicks. I try to refrain most of the time its just annoying how people always pick people apart on this site. Its not a good representation of ourselves to new shooters. Like I said, I think the site would be a much better place if people would just keep their negative comments to themselves. There are very few examples where they're needed or helpful.

Its an internet gun discussion forum, mall ninjas get made
fun of. They learn and ask less mall ninarish questions. We have probably saved countless mall ninja's from public embarrassment and or arrest by this form of friendly humour.

it's never to late to learn, here's the crash course:
1- reasonable and necessary force. Don't hit first, don't use a closed fist, always be yelling 'get away from me, stop hitting me' etc in the loudest voice possible.
2- don't try to absorb energy, redirect it. You're not arresting someone, you're defending yourself. In a 'street fight', a bystander is going to be calling 911, and someone is going to be recording the whole thing on their phone. This is good if you're being smart.
3- Just like in hockey, defence is all about time and space. You need time to react to someone's aggression, which means creating space between you and them. The NIKE defence is the best- put space between you with your feet moving as fast as you can.
4- if you've got a gun in a holster on your belt, under your arm, wherever, defend it with your life, and have some kind of 'less lethal' option to defend yoruself.
