Is the Marlin 795 any good?

My 795 from Cabela's arrived today. 100 rounds so far with no malfunctions. Trigger pull is 8.3 lbs. Accuracy at 25 yards with the factory sights was around an 1" (10 shot groups). I'm hoping for much better with peep sights and the MCARBO spring kit. I will eventually scope it just to see how well it'll really do, but this one is destined to wear peeps for most of its life.

mmatt: give us an update once you install the spring kit and sights.

i got my 795 last week, but exams are keeping me indoors for the next little while. i can't wait to shoot this thing! its a nice gun, everything looks and feels solid. i appreciate the fact that marlin threw in a cable lock too, i know it only costs them 50 cents to make it, but the fact that they were willing to include it with a $140 budget rifle means they just earned a repeat customer

Huh... I didn't get a cable lock. Maybe Cabela's kept it to sell and raise a few more bucks. Either way, I don't care, I never use them anyway. Combination all the way for me. That way I never forget my key. :)

I definitely will update as I progress. A video is being made as well.

:) Yes I am.

On a 795 related note, I've noticed that the action is not as tight as my previous rifle or my buddy's rifle. There is considerable play in the front.

(the front "arms" should be tight up against the pin)

I don't know if this will contribute to any problems, but I'm in the process of shimming it, if only to keep it from rattling when I shake it. (I hate a loose rifle)

sir, i await your vid. btw, did you look under all that cardboard packaging at the ends of the box? thats where i found the lock

CGNers are the best!
I bought a 795 from Cabelas last month. The box is sitting in my garage waiting to go to the cardboard bin at the dump. Not 5 minutes ago I read the post about the cable lock, ran out to the garage and checked...there it was! I had no idea they had even sent one. Bonus!! Hahaha! Thanks guys!

the one thing I do not understand is why the company would take the time and trouble to put a great little .22 on the market-accurate ,functional,reliable-and then curse it with one of the WORST triggers I have ever seen. The fact that ''fixes''are available means that they could come from the factory this way.A lighter pull, less creep-is not rocket science and if the individual can do it-surely it could be incorporated into the manufacturing process with minimal effort or expense. I restocked my 795 into a Boyds thumbhole laminate stock-love the gun-except for the trigger. My 30 year old marlin has an infinetly better trigger-light-crisp-as good as you can get.if it wasn't broke-why did they ''fix'' it?

Liability issues no doubt.

As for the sloppy action, here's my solution so far, we'll see how well it holds up.

I took a couple of spare 1/8" dremel chucks and cut them to the appropriate length and used silicone to hold them in place. No more sloppy action. :)

maybe they didn't want to cannibalize the sales from their pricier models

I'd be very surprised if you did. Love mine! :)

You seem to love your 795. Just curious about where yours comes from? Is it from KY or NY? Mine is from KY and it has no major hiccups, can't say the same for NY models. I do feed it CCI Mini-Mags (40 grains), and they work well with it.

I had the marlin.... I too was sucked in by the low price!

Let me tell you. There IS A REASON it's so cheap. You ask if it's a POS?
You nailed it right on the head! Ftfeed, FTF, FTE, no matter what I did... Sparkling clean or dirty as a Heck.... It would not cycle...

The 3/8 dovetail was a pain in the a**! Scope just kept moving and moving with every shot! Within 50 rounds it had moved 1/4 to half and inch backwards.... Nothing I did fixed it, except crazy glue when I became angry with the thing.

I not have a 10/22 and have never looked back! Spend the extra $$$ it's worth it.

Just speaking from my experience.

I had all the same scope issues Solved with crazy glue
FTF only when dirty, otherwise worked great.
Sold it and got a savage but I'd do it all again the marlin is cheap fun!
Don't forget the $25 mail in rebate so the marlin is barely a hundred bucks!
Buy one have fun then trade up.

Time to revive this thread with a couple of videos.

Unboxing the new 795 with some shooting and a quick and dirty accuracy review.
