it totally has the cool look factor for it, but it does add a bit of weight vs the competition. what are the benefits on something like the Henry Hand's Mare for a .44RM or some such?

Beauty lies in the hands awf the reeb holder.
Buy one of each so there won't be any disappointmint awn yer decision.

On a little Savage Favorite 22 mag I once owned, I do believe the barrel may have started out round and then milled down to octagon flat faces - was a LOT lighter thing than the round ones on my other rimfire. No clue how the older Winchesters and such were done

Only you can really answer that question. If there is a weight difference, is the heavier weight a good thing to you? If not, does the looks of the octagon barrel outweigh the downside of more weight?

At the end of the day, it all comes down to which one you think looks better IMO. Octagon barrels have a very oldschool classic kind of look, goes well with the oldschool crescent buttplates.

I really like the look of them. But I did hold some Henry's that with the octagonal barrel were very front heavy. Beautiful rifles just too front heavy for me.

Dampens recoil some. 44 really isn't that bad.
I don't like the balance of the henry. It's not as bad on a rifle with a full stock, but I wouldn't buy the mares leg with the octagonal barrel.

That said, I prefer a round barrel on a rifle as well just for the weight savings.
