Is the VZ58 worth it or not?

Been scrolling through the threads on CGN and trying to decide what to buy. I am very interested in the VZ58 but I have to say that after doing some reading it appears that there are a lot of issues with them. Is that really the case? I don't feel like being one of the guys who spends $1,400 on a rifle, ammo, and mags, only to send it off for repairs the day after I get it.

I'd love some feedback, and if I were to get a VZ58, which one is the best? 7.62x39 or .223?

Don't spend $1400, buy the gun try it out and if you like it get the ammo in bulk and extra mags.

Mine's a .223 11.75" model. I also have an AR15 in the same caliber so they can share the ammo. But 7.62x39 ammo is cheap so that would be the main and only advantage. I have SKS for that :D

I have a restricted CZH 2003 in 7.62x39, with a folding wire stock and some aftermarket goodies on it. It's a fun little rifle, I haven't had any issues with mine. Zahal.org has lots of goodies for them.

I recently purchased a VZ58 in 7.62x39. I'm hoping that it will arrive with no issues seeing as it's my most expensive rifle purchase to date. I suggest having a beer while contemplating the idea

Csa vz58 in 223 with a 11.75 barrel.

Csa vz58 in 7.62x39 with a 18.5 barrel.

Not a problem with either now. The 223 liked to stove pipe casing on occasion when new. That has disappeared now though having been broken in. All good. No repairs done.

I love my CSA VZ-58 in 7.62x39. Zero issues so far. I have heard that the .223 version is quite a bit more prone to issues. Specifically, I head they easily break firing pins.

I've tried it i find it bounces up more than my sks they were both chambered in 7.62x39 great gun though, the only thought running through my mind was my sks was more comfortable shooting for way cheaper, but it does look sweet and it works flawlessly.

I've had issues with the CSA guns but was very well taken care of.

I now have my VZ58 all tricked out and couldn't be happier.

There is more flip than an SKS until you put a straight stock on it then they're very comparable.

SKS or VZ58, came down to how easy the VZ58 can make mag changes. With 5 round mags I didn't want to be fiddling with stripper clips or clunky mag changes on the SKS.

Just curious with the guys (and gals) who own em, which is more reliable The .223 or the 7.62x39

Overall, I want a reliable rifle. Thats my biggest selling point.

Czech mil-spec is a 7.62x39 rifle with a 390mm (15.4 inch) barrel. The further you get away from that the more you will encounter reliability issues...

My bolt broke on mine due to an out of spec gas tube, still my favorite by far, sure the sks is same caliber more reliable etc etc but would you drive a chevy or a cadillac?

In the end as long as you buy a plane jane one you will get you money back, as far as mods go I personnaly think wood is the way to go.

I had a CZ 858 Vz 58. Other than Gremlin type 2, must easier to repair compared to Gremlin type 1, that rifle was as reliable as my SKS.

I currently have a CSA 18.5 .223 Vz 58. It was with the skeleton stock, non-chromelined barrel. I switched the skeleton stock for an original CSA AR stock and a Fab Defense pistol grip and then I added the AR-15 magwell adapter. Oddly enough, out of all the AR-15 magazines I have, the Chinese one works the best now that I fixed what was wrong with it when I first got it. The USGI mags work for awhile until the bolt wears out the last round bolt open tap on the magazine follower and then stops the last round bolt hold open function. The followers on the USGI magazines are plastic and wear out easily while the Chinese magazines have a metal follower. Not so easy to wear out. I might switch back to original magazines soon enough as I don't much like using my Vz 58 like an AK.

My .223 Vz 58 had to be sent in for the bolt dissembling its self while in use. The piston was changed because of an over pressure issue, the bolt, bolt carrier, and the rear retaining pin were all replaced. The warranty service was fast. I currently have another issue with the rifle that has me speaking to the owner of CSA though Movie Arms. Although its inconvenient to have a $1000 rifle not work properly, I respect CSA's warranty service and them standing for their product so I will continue to promote their products but with an honest review.

The rifle may or may not be reliable but either way, CSA will have your back covered when or if something does go wrong. Keep in mind that they now make and sell chromelined models now. A little more expensive but a much longer barrel life span.

Have No Fear! Non restricted .30 cal. Czech Small Arms is well backed with any warrant issues in Canada!

Vz58 all the way!! Hands down my go to rifle. 7.62x39 is way to go too. Surplus x39 is way cheaper than .223 and it cleans as easy as the Sks.
I have 2-18.5" in 7.62x39 and a 7.5" in .223. All have been flawless so far.
Soon buying the 11.8" in 7.62x39
