Is the Winchester model 70 E.W. in .308 a short action?

With removal of the mag spacer, the blade ejector needed to be altered so that it didn’t interfere with the longer round coming up from below.

That's interesting, I will look at that tonight.
I would like to see one of these with the full length mag box in 257 Roberts. That would be the 3" 257 that Jack O'connor wrote about.

Mine was originally a M70 SA in 243 Win that was rebarreled to a 6mm Rem. The spacer was removed and now the mag box measures 3.08”

Thanks for showing the mag box Buckmastr.
I looked at it last night and that would make a perfect 257 Roberts mag box as the 6 mm and 257 are the same case.
Who did the mods on the magazine box?

I am the proud owner of an Extreme weather Winny in .30-06 and love the gun every which way from Sunday. I bought it in this caliber because it was all that was available. I really really wanted one in .308win but never did find one. I cannot find any info online as to whether it is a short action or blocked off long action. Does anyone own one in a short action chambering (.243, 308, 300wsm, etc) that can verify if it is truly a short action? These guns seem rarer than hens teeth...

Could someone explain what a blocked off long action is ?
Thanks

Sure, It's when a long action is used to house a shorts action cartridge. The manufacturer installs a spacer in the back of the magazine box to reduce the length for the short cartridge. The pre64 model 70 Winchester is a good example.
Early Post 64 push feeds were also the same till somewhere in the 1980s.
I believe the Tikka rifles are the same.

Some manufacturers only make one length of action, yet chamber short, medium and long cartridges in it. (Tikka for example) Since a .223 is not optimal in a gun that can house a .30-06, they need to shorten the magazine and thus the length of travel for the cartridge by putting a block or spacer at the back of the mag box.

Okay still have a couple of questions regarding this short action long action topic . So if some manufactures use short calibers in long action rifles they put a spacer in the magazine for the shorter cartridge correct ? Then does the bolt draw as far back as a long action ? Is the bolt for a short action shorter than a bolt for a long action ? I'm still learning about all things rifles !
Thanks for you help !

#1 This is correct, as far as the Winchesters are concerned.
#2 The bolt stops are longer and the bolt only draws back to clear the cartridge in the magazine.
#3 A short cartridge in a long action has a long action bolt, But a short action cartridge in a short action rifle has a shorter bolt. Hope that makes sense.

Hi David
Hi think I have got it . I think , LOL ! In your opinion would it be better to have a true short action for a short action caliber rather than a long action made to shoot a short action cartridge ? Hope I'm making sense here ! Thank you for the reply !
