Is there a "best" .40cal pistol?

Stopping power and capacity between 9mm and 45 ACP.

Cue the super hero music

Right because the .45 stopped people from attacking too much

Less recoil yes, but not enough for that to be the reason for a new caliber. I own a .40 but it's my competition gun. I believe the reason most people buy one is increased magazine capacity with good stopping power.

P.S. Had a new Browning Hi Power out to the range yesterday in 40. Mk III.

Was able to hit head shots at 50 yards. However when I first started out, I wasn't doing so hot. I had a break in period to get used to the gun. Double taps were better handled than my 40 Sig, which I have around 2,000 rounds more experience shooting.

Please don't let this thread deteriorate into the tired old ".40 is the answer to a problem that didn't exist" crap....it's borderline elitist and is based on nothing that can be satisfactorily proven. The simple bottom line is that the .40 is here, and it's here to stay. Deal with it.
The other mistaken notion is that the .40cal S&W cartridge is "in between" the 9mmP and a .45ACP. Both the 9mm and .40 are high-pressure cartridges....the .45ACP is a low-pressure cartridge. Apples to oranges.
Now back to our regularly scheduled program. :D
Thanks for all the ideas re: the "best" .40cal pistol, guys...it's given me lots of food for thought.

Hear, hear!

I'm not a big fan of 40S&W.
Having said that, my two personal choices are:
Sig226 Stainless...nicest pistol to do an extended range trip with.
S&W M&P...my choice if I had to CCW/Duty carry a 40.
It has significantly less recoil than a Glock22, much better mags (loading wise),
and the grip can be adjusted to fit anyone.

I have seen the Tanfoglio Limited Custom in use at local matches. I have an STI Edge in .40, and I think I like the grip of the Tanfoglio a little better.

cybershooters, thanks for your great response.. did you find that the P229 frame wears out from personal experience or from what you've heard? If so, at how many rounds?

Not many. For a laugh I took mine to a WSSA match once (does the WSSA even exist anymore? Basically steel plate shooting) and found that it was extremely good on steel plates and I could get really fast times with it. So I decided to use it for that, basically I was shooting the snot out of it, very rapid fire, using CCI Blazer 180gr TMJ, which is a pretty warm load.

If you do that the frame won't last long, mine cracked after only a couple of thousand rounds, SIG Arms replaced the whole gun for free. Hairline crack on the left rail going forward about an inch and a half, IIRC. Serial number was AB19576. And then all the WSSA matches disappeared.

Hence the reason they came out with the SIG-Sauer P229 Sport, if you find some of the original sales literature it even mentions it has a stainless steel frame for competition use. I think they dropped that later on though because it made the aluminum frame sound crap.

If you use it more sedately they will last a reasonably long amount of time, my second one was fine after several thousand rounds, then I traded that one in on one in .357 SIG.

Bear in mind this was all a long time ago when they first came out, I dare say the newer ones are better as the .40 P226 I've got now is fantastically better than the one I had in .357 SIG back in 1996.

Only five pistols are the "best" chambered in .40S&W

Beretta 96FS
Glock 22
SigSauer P226
H&K USP
Smith & Wesson (Prohib)

1911's only belong in one calibre, I think everyone knows what that it :)

I suppose it would depend what you wanted to do with it. Carry it all day long, target shooting, CCW?
that being said, I've put 10,000 plus rounds through my Beretta 96D, without a probelm. Just make sure it has the 2nd gen locking block.
I like the Glock 22 because of the light weight, and the Glock 27. The new MP looks promising. The Sig P229 is a nice size, between duty and CCW. But, in my heart of heart's, it's the BHP all the way, the gun fits like a glove and it's just dam ###y!!!!!
