The conversation on this thread has been very educational. The better half is getting a new rifle for Christmas, and after doing some research and pros/cons, settled on a .308 Win. I had quite seriously considered the .270, as it is a similar case size to my .30-06 (and have the dies for it - two good buddies have .270's), and loosely considered the 7mm-08. I eventually settled on the .308 because I can load it light for her (even got her two boxes of Hornady Custom Lite to get used to it) and when she feels confident to go hunting I can load her up some Partitions in 165 or 180 grain, the same bullets I load for the .30-06. I can also get bulk ammo cans of .308 range safe FMJ for her to practice with relatively inexpensively. I know, the numbers for speed are not as high, but considering when we go hunting it will be 200-250 yards max (most likely under 100), it means more to me that she's not afraid of pulling the trigger and that she can put the bullet where she wants to without flinching. I don't mind a .30-06 with 180's, even as a "not-so-beefy but not girly" kind of guy, and the .308 is even a bit easier on the shoulder, so that's my $0.02.
Oh right - no more pennies. I guess $0.02 rounds down to worthless
