Is there a better magazine follower for the Savage?

I've been working on getting my new Savage ready for the range and one of the things that has been bothering me is the magazine follower. It's plastic and the bolt of course being metal doesn't glide smoothly over the follower. It makes it noisy to cycle to boot. I much prefer the metal follower that is found standard in the M70. Is there something I can do to smoother out or make this plastic one better? Or can I order a better one from somewhere else?

Load up the mag and use it. All issues go away. By the time you get to the bare follower again, likely the dead animal will not care about the noise.

Or you will be too deaf to hear it :)

Because it works, there has been little effort to replace it. There were steel ones from Savage on much older rifles. If you can find them, they are a drop in.

Try Western Gun parts in Alberta.

Western Gun Parts. Thanks for the tip! Sometimes I just feed one round at a time. Usually when I'm sighting in or just or just because I want to. Anyways I could be out plinking coyotes and the last one is just coming in to see and as I load the last round..... well I guess the first 4 shots will probably scare that last one away. Anyways it just doesn't feel smooth and I'd like to make it better.

I do it because I care. :p

Well called Western Gun Parts today and they said they didn't think Savage ever did make a metal magazine follower. Might have to put an add in the EE :)

I doubt a metal follower will help your cause, as the problem is the fact that the follower touches the bolt, not the material it's made of.

Look at a new Rem 700 follower vs the old ones for example...the new style has a lip that sits under the feed rails (off of the bolt) while the old ones actually contact the bolt the entire time (and is not as smooth to operate on an empty magazine)

As Jerry posted, when loaded it makes no difference...
