I'm using wst with 40 cal 180gr berry bullets. Is there really a difference between others powders/brands? I see people making recommendations on powders but im wondering if there is a reason or if it just happened to be the first powder they tried and stuck with it.

Yes there is a difference. Firstly some powders will work, and others won't (different applications require different powders).
Next: from the set of powders that work, some will work better than others. Some will work, but will be:
- too dirty
- too expensive
- too hard to get a reliable supply of
- too inconsistent (lot-to-lot variations).
- probably five other reasons that don't spring to mind immediately.

However: are there a variety of powders that will work well? yes.

p.s. My personal favorite for your bullet weight is WSF, but other powders work fine.

Besides economic and functional reasons, there is also felt or percieved recoil.

All things being equal, smaller powder charges of faster burning powders seem to have a quieter muzzle blast.

why WSF? wst is a faster powder isnt it?

I like the versatility of WSF and use it for IPSC loads in 9, 40 and 45.

Yes, WST is faster than WSF. I have tried WST in the past, but to be honest, cannot remember why I stopped using it. My preference of WSF is not meant to say other's choices are not valid.

I have used tightgroup for 180grn 40's for a while. I use less poweder and find it cleaner burning than WSF. Lots of guys use VVN320 but it can be expensive and harder to find.

There are powders that I have used for almost 20 years. They are not the best, but I am so used to them that I have no desire to change.

If it ain't broke, is it necessary to fix it?

WST is faster, but it also doesn't like really hot weather so you have to account for that in your loading.
WSF is a bit more stable that way.
