Is there a good beginner guide to reloading?

Get the new LYMan book for reloading mettallics.
Also the Hornady book if you want to use Hornadies
Get a good single stage press, [DON'T BUY THE CHEAP LEE PRESS].
THEIR BIG PRESS IS VERY GOOD
GET A GOOD SCALE [NOT A AN ELECTRIC ONE]. LYMAN OUHUS OR RCBS
READ ALL THAT YOU CAN AND DON'T TAKE LOADS OFF OF THE INTERNET EXCEPT THE HODGDON SITE

I started out with the Lee kit, came with the manual which explains every process. It's good enough to get going.

To each his own. I have the $35 Lee single stage and have been using it for 10 years. Started with handgun loads, now using it mainly for rifle, including 7mm Weatherby Magnum. No problems with it at all. I also use a small electric scale. Every year I load a few thousand rounds (although most handgun ammo is now on my Lee turret press). I personally have never had any issue with any Lee product, but YMMV.

can you cook/bake- if you can, then you can reload- I got a pacific manual back in the 60's and then the lyman manual as it shows pressures as well as a chapter on rolling your own- and my presses ( I have 4 as I don't like to change components- 3 lee 1000,a turret, Dillon, and a loadmaster- the lees are alright for 223 , but for the really big stuff you can't beat the dillon

and derive your data from more than one source- I pull up all the reloading manuals I can find on a particular caliber and make a note of and compare the sheets- including some really oddball places- like sniper's hide for the m118 308 - there's a recipe out there called the m118slr, special long range - and that's what I use in all my 308s, even the hunting stuff- just change the bullet and adjust the powder to get the best group

If better accuracy for rifle shooting ever sparks your interest, then after you get a beginner book and manual(s), order a copy of "Handloading for Competition: Making the Target Bigger" by Glen Zediker. In hindsight, I should have bought this book more than a decade ago. It would have really saved me a lot of self-taught trial and error. It covers tons in an easy to comprehend style and you can take away what you want from it depending on your needs. There is great potential for misinformation and hopeful thinking about the performance of your equipment and components and buying this book eliminated all of that for me. I'd highly recommend.
