Hello,

I am beginning to get deep into the literature on the Mosin Nagant, focussing on the M91 model(s).

I am aware of such texts as the Martini-Henry/Enfield Treatise by Ian Skennerton, The Crown Jewels about Swedish rifles and The Lee Enfield Book.

Is there such a book or set of books on Tsarist Mosins? Or even the entire Mosin family? I have searched and read Mosinnagant.net and 7.62X54R.net and have committed quite a bit to memory. However, there is quite a bit that texts can teach you, and I'd like to get some someday!

Sincerely,
D

The Mosin-Nagant Rifle by Terence Lapin.

Better than nothing, but a long way from being a Bible and not in the same league as Skennerton.

Drei Lineen is great and also on the Finnish Mosin Nagants (but only available in Finnish) Sotilaskäsiaseet Suomessa "Military Small Arms in Finland" 1918-1988. Volumes 1 - 3 Markku Palokangas

Yes, I had forgotten about that one JP. Do you own a copy?

No, I almost bit the bullet a couple of times when I was collecting Mosin-Nagants but the cost was very high and the fact that no English or French version exist was a deal breaker for me. I have friends in the USA who have copies, so if I need to, they can check out stuff for me.

The Mosin 'Bible' is:

Drei Linien die Gewehre Mosin-Nagant. (Three Line Rifle) Volume 2 by Karl-Heinz Wrobel.

But you have to read German.

saw that book at a show I am so p!ssed that it is only in german the pictures and detail looked amazing

I saw a post for someone wanting to buy it on Gunboards. I think the expected price for a used set was in the $300-$500 range.

You might want to buy it if its a good price! I'll bet you could resell it if you didn't want it. Easier to translate German than Finnish.

Prices went down on Mosins.
You can get Mosin as cheap as $110 from westrifle.com that if you looking for Russian.
Finish and Hungarian more expensive. I agree with you. But they still popping up now and then for $300-500 dollars range.

4 or 5 years ago I had the 3 volume Finn book set in my hands and I could have bought them brand new for $300.00 US, but by then I had pretty much sold off all my 60 + collection of MN guns so I did not buy the book set.

Local military historical pieces and Fenian Raids items.

Over, the last 40 years I have built up and sold off several large collections. When I can't find anything new I get bored and move on to something different. I like the thrill of the chase in collecting. I have seen many of my former guns, pop-up on CGN after going through several hands.

The Mosin Bible

In the beginning thou shalt shoot high and right.
Covereth thy shoulder lest thee gettest one large bruise.
Think not of other Mosins lest thee haveth enough shackles to aquire them.
Do not covet thy neighbours Mosin.
Cleaneth out thy greasy cosmoline lest thee get a missfire or split barrel.
Thou shalt cleaneth thy gun after shooting corrosive.
Thou shalt showeth painting (pics.) of thy firearm to your Gunnethnutz comrades.
Thou shalt not bubba-eth your mosin or yee shalt be dealt with in the harshest manner.
Keep not thy Mosin in the safe ,rather yee shall shooteth it regularly, and talketh nicely to those onlookers who gather round the big bang stick.
Encourage others to follow in the ways of the Mosin, yay speaketh of its wonders, and virtues.
Yeay thou we walk through the shadows of the valley of death ,we shall fear no evil, for we carry Mosins and are the meanest s.o.b's in the valley!

Awesometh!

Karl-Heinz Wrobel and Marku Palokanga (sp?) are pretty much THE dudes to give info on Mosins but alas, their books are in foreign tongues!

I have Lapin's book, it is a good place to start and a great pocket references for those times when you need to make a random buy or sell but it is far from complete in terms of information.

If you want a quick assessment of information online, the best places to go (IMHO) are:

Gunboards.net
Surplusrifleforum.com
Milsurpcollectors.com

And for more info Finnish and non Finnish weapons used in the Winter and Continuation Wars I'd recommend:

JAEGER PLATOON:

FINNISH ARMY 1918 - 1945 WEBSITE
http://www.jaegerplatoon.net/MAIN.html.

This is an awesome resource - not many pics but lots of background on all the weapons and how and when they were used by the Finns.

Plus the fellow that maintains it has fired some of the weapons and gives his personal opinions.
