Is there a steel/aluminum tariff on guns??

Canada has not imposed any tariffs on US Steel.

Yes they have. I posted the link to the Countermeasures in Response to Unjustified Tariffs on Canadian Steel and Aluminum Products already. Table 1 details the various forms of steel ready for manufacture, from coils, tubes, bars, ingots, wire, &c &c.

Table 2 is aluminium for manufacture: both refined metal and semi-finished such as frames, blank empty cans. Table 3 is mostly un-related consumer goods, including food such as yogourt, strawberry preserves, and soy sauce, and as diverse as cosmetics, glues, kitchen 'fridges, or playing cards. And of course bourbon whisky.

These have been in effect since 1 July, 2018.

Firearms manufactured in the U.S.A. are not subject to that 7% tariff talked about. And besides, that is not a new tariff. There are no new tariffs on firearms that I am aware of.

The most likely explanation is fluctuations in global currency markets. If someone is using the excuse of a burgeoning trade war to explain why your gun has gone up, they may not be aware of the facts, or they're trying to snow you…

I stand corrected I did not think Trudeau had imposed Steel and Aluminum tariffs. The price fluctuations as I indicated and you confirm are more likely as a result of FX fluctuations than anything else. Trump has not imposed tariffs on US exports., we have.

No it hasn't where do you get your information fro?. The Trump tariffs apply to steel imported into the US not their exports. It would make no sense to tax US domestic producers. Who do you think pays for Trumps tariffs? He makes it sound like the Chinese pay the tariffs on their products sold in to the US. It is the US importer and then the US consumer that pays the tariffs NOT the Chinese. The whole idea of tariffs is to make imported goods more expensive which in theory would make domestic products more competitive. Unfortunately what is theory and what actually happens is not always the same thing.

I am getting my info from our metal suppliers. I may have it wrong but that was how it was explained to me by 2 suppliers when I questioned why our steel and aluminum bar stock jumped in price a couple of months ago.

red_bailey explained the situation well. The US taxed Canadian imported steel and aluminum, Canada retaliated with tariffs on aluminum and steel products, produced in the US. Unfortunately, and this is what annoys me, "most" distributors at that time, July 1 2018, and to this day, did not discriminate the US product from other importation. Bottom line, all the steel and aluminum products aimed by the Canadian tariffs increased in price and more then the 10% and 25% stated by the government, regardless of the origin. The tariffs aim aluminum and steel produced in the US. If the material was produced outside the US, say South Korea then shipped to the US and then trucked to Canada , the tariff does not apply. I spent the better part of the month of July 2018 on the phone with suppliers/distributors. I had meetings with sales managers every other day. At the end of the day, I got a truckfull of "sorry, company policy".

Trudeau's team had the right idea I believe, but they did not understand that the downflow would tangent way out in left field, something that a lot saw coming. The result is the manufacturers got the bill. If the spirit of the tariffs would have been followed, the impact would have been greater and felt a lot more south of the border. Instead, it just made drama in the local news, and left the manufacturers out in the cold while still fulfilling their obligations. Manufacturers filled the state coffres, the distributor increased their sales ($$), and the laidoff mill workers got extra months of UI.

The US consumer has not yet felt the full effect of Trumps tariffs on Chinese goods. In addition I have to ask why would any country want to deal with the US on agreements when they ignore them whenever they want. If I was Trudeau for a day, I shudder at that thought, I would not sign NAFTA until the steel and aluminum tariffs are off our steel and aluminum. If he does he is a GD coward caving in to a bully who needs a kick in the ass.

I have noticed lately the price of new guns are creeping up. Some of the new guns I bought last year are now a couple hundred dollars more, I know the weakness in dollar doesn't help but seems like prices are increasing higher than usual. I know shops have different prices and sometimes prices from one to another is quite a difference but just wondering if anyone knows if tariffs apply to guns.

The tariff's on steel and aluminum have nothing to do with the price on guns going up as far as I'm concerned. it's our weak dollar and prices have been going up for a long time . more so recently .
