Is there an aerodymic 8mm bullet available?

I first typed, and less boringly common than the 06, but deleted it! ;)

I agree dangertree. I've been through at least five 06's and the last one I only fired when I was with the guy buying it from me. A beautiful rifle in a very good caliber but it's time to try something else that does the same thing. ;) :D

I can't wait to try punching the paper at 400 yards with this rifle.:)

Here's an inexpensive and aerodynamic 8mm 218gr bullet:

You can buy them here: www.marstar.ca/ammo/792x63mm.htm and they will come with useful powder and brass you can sell for scrap after deactivating the primers. Or you can rechamber to 8x63mm Swedish and shoot the stuff.

Obviously you guys need an 8mm-06, the best of both worlds (particularly the AI version). - dan

I had been thinking about reaming it out to the 8x63 that Andy mentions here but my barrel is only 23 or 24" so I am not so sure it would be worth it. I should have been more descriptive in my thread title as I want to find a 180gr bullet that is sleek and also good for a hunting situation. As much as I'd love to figure out two loads for the rifle I don't get a lot of range time each year so I am limited to one rifle, one load.

I think I will try out the 180gr Ballistic tip and see how it holds up in the same media as the 154gr Interbond in my 7x57 for comparison.
Folks are saying the revamped the jacket on them to be more suitable for hunting but I'd like to check and see. They aren't constructed the same but a rough idea should present itself.

Thanks for all the input boys!;)

Noel,
Rather than bug Hornady, you might make nice to Richard at Alberta Wildcat Bullets. I don't know if he is set up for 8mm (collets and stuff), but I am sure that he could be persuaded. If enough guys agree to order bullets in a new diameter, he will usually bring in the jackets and cores and start making really LONG ones to play with!

I already asked!
Price is pretty high for him to tool up , but if enough of us asked and oredered, I'm sure he would!
He now is set up for polymer tips!:dancingbanana:

I have his bullet list at work and will check it. I mention bugging the big H only because the person who responded seemed to think they dropped the ball by not including an 8 in the new line up. It was almost like they were going to but forgot, perhaps only needing a little encouragement is all they'd need to remember.

Having said that, I also sat down last night and did some studying on trajectories of the three cartridges I will be shooting for awhile. It had been mentioned here that the B.C. wasn't going to make a huge difference and they are right, out to 400yds anyway. After that things start to change fast!

My two year old boy is helping me type right now so I best give details at a later time! LOL

Alright, Reid is down for a nap.

I won't post the trajectories for the 7mm and the 9,3 but just so you know my goal was to find a bullet suitable for the game that will be persued with each caliber, and also one that has a similar velocity and profile. Some may say this is a bit boring, but it works for me, one less thing to worry about when afield or at the range. Here are two examples of what two 8mms MIGHT look like. I say might besause I don't know if I can reach the speeds I went with or not, this is only to show how close they come to eachother.

180gr Nosler Solid Base, 2800fps, 250yd zero. B.C. .36:
1. 3.3" 2. 2.7" 3. -4.4" 4. -19" 5. -44.3" 6. -67"

200gr Nosler Partition, 2700fps, 250yd zero. B.C. .426:
1. 3.5" 2. 3" 3. -4.5" 4. -19" 5. -44" 6. -80.3"

I don't have 180gr Data for the velocity, but the manual does list 2700 for the 200gr which I am a bit skeptical of. A rough calculation gave me the 2800fps. Although the 200gr has a slghtly higher arc it certainly holds it's own to 400yds which would be argueably farther than you'd want to take a big game animal anyway unless you are a sniper. That part I am still working on!

I guess this will be my starting point, I will see how they shoot and hold up as compared to what I already have found to work well.
