Probably be easier to find the gun than the ammo. I hope you reload, be sure to stock up when you find something. I believe the last time I was thinking of the ol 500, ammo was $2 per loud noise, that was before all the $$$ silliness, I'd hate to see what it costs now. Until my 6/49 comes in, the 44 will have to do.

500 S&W ammo is fairly easy to find.

They are great guns - I love my 6.5"

$3 a pop for Winchester Silvertips in my area. I pulled one and the powder charge weighted at 42 grains.

I reload mostly 500 gr XTP plus I waiting for 600 gr and 700 gr custom molds.

The revolver and ammo are(were) available at the local shop hear in Victoria, bullets run in the $3.75 each range, the gun was $1600 - I picked up both!

Got mine a while back, an 8 3/8". If you reload, there's lots of variety available.

8 & 3/8 with the muzzle brake is the only way to go.
Try the 550 grain hornady or the 700 grain reload bullets. If you can shoot more than 5 rounds and still make a fist then you should considered a Super Freak!

I've made mention of it previously, and you're right, it does have the ability to inflict pain, at both ends. With the heavier bullets and hot loads, the Hogue grips leave a lot to be desired. What I ended up doing was modify an old set of Jorden Trooper stocks by Herritts and that seems to have tamed the recoil a little. Spreads the pain over a bigger area. It did seem to help though. I don't mind the 8 3/8" barrel but I could do without the muzzle break. I think the only purpose it serves is to spit back powder particles.

I shot one at our local range, its definatly a 2 hander, you need to fire it in the rifle range, more of a novelty gun because of the price for ammo.

Shot one run and my right hand hasn't forgiven since! Glad I shot it once, no need to experience that again I don't think.

Great gun though, just not sure what for. If you can rapid fire a 12 gauge pump gun using a pistol grip one handed you will love the 500.

Personally, I had no intention of getting one until I shot my buddy's. Five shots off of a rest at 25 yds using a 440gr GC bullet @ 1000 f/sec, one ragged 1 1/4" hole. Suddenly, I 'needed' one! Since then, virtually any reload ammo I've put through it has shot well.

I've made some preliminary inquiries into using it on a hunt for Moose in Alaska and it could be a little pricey but who knows! If I get the opportunity to do a 649 Happy Dance, it'll become a reality.
