I was wondering if i could shoot gophers (or anything else for that matter) without a valid hunting licence in Ontario. Everytime i go plinking on crown land, there is always some annoying squirrel running around. Im not really into killing big animals, and getting a hunting licence just to shoot gophers once in a while is pretty stupid in my opinion.

Dumbdawg and others just helped me out with this for BC. Here anything "Schedual C"/invasive pest species that are listed "may be captured or killed at any time in BC.... You do not need a hunting liscence to hunt or kill the following animals".....

I guess ontario is different, but here grey and fox squirrels are listed as open season. Just make sure you aren't offing one of the last native species squirrels around - they've got it tough as it is!

This maybe a dumb question, but are there even any gophers (AKA Richardson's Ground Squirrel) in Ontario?

gray and black squirrels are the same species, there is a season here in Ontario.

There is nothing you can shoot without at least a small game license. It is to make sure you are safe to hunt period. If you are a farmer, and around your home or barn then there is some gray area.

Lots of squirrels in Ont....two legged ones.........my understanding of Ont. Regs. is: no hunting of any kind without a lic.......no varmints or anything! Ont. doesn't have gophers in any quant. but does have groundhogs, their numbers have dropped right off in my old hunting grounds just north/east of T.O. due apparently to coyotes, and i don't know if they have made a comeback.

Black & grey squirrels are fair game in Ontario with a small game license. Red squirrels are classified as fur bearers & you need a trappers license to take them. Ground hogs in my hunting areas in Lanark county are almost non-existent. Don't see many yotes either so who knows what it is. Used to be 4 or 5 in every hay field.

to add, you need a small game luscence in ontario to hunt anything , even starlings and crows, regardless of what you use a sling shot or an air rifle or co2 pistol or a rock.

"...are there even any gophers (AKA Richardson's Ground Squirrel) in Ontario?..." Nope. Just wandering around in the bush with any firearm without a hunting licence can get you charged.

Apparently anything in the Jane Finch area of Moronto can be shot with impunity. Not legally mind you but it only seems to be wrong if you get caught.

Thanks guys, i guess i better get the hunting licence then.

Really? Ive been doing it for years and never had any troube.. But then i never had my papers checked by anybody. Can you actually get in trouble for "plinking"?

as long as you can prove that you are only plinking you should be ok

If you run into a Conservation Officer and he concludes that you are hunting instead of target shooting he could charge you. If he's convinced you're just plinking then you'll be fine.

Get the small game licence. Also be aware that Ontario hunting regulations put certain shot and cartridge size restrictions depending where you are and what seasons are open.
