You did the right thing. Shooting that easy bear would be like telling a drunk visually impaired chick that you look like Val Kilmer.
I feel bad every time I do that !
 
I don't think there is anything wrong with what you did. About 12 years ago I hunted a nice buck on private land for 4 seasons gun and bow. I knew he was there but rarely seen him in the day and when I would see him he would be out of range or in thick cover. Finally one morning during the rut he made a mistake and I had the cross hairs on him at 35 yards.
I must have put the gun up and down 5 or 6 times but I will never forget the stare he gave me. It was like shooting an old friend. I finally said bang I got you and he ran off. I never got another chance at him and he was hit with a truck the following year and killed. I never thought I did the wrong thing..
 
I guided a guy from Texas here in AB on a moose hunt. Had a 50+ bull come out to a call at about 90 yds

Clear ####, but no shot taken. I asked him why. He told me he just couldnt do it. He had never seen a moose in life before and was just taken aback by its presence.

He has hunted all over the place. But this moose left him spellbound

Got him a nice WT tho
 
You did what you felt was right. Not sure why you would second guess it. :)

But like you said, now you have to buy meat. This meat will possibly have consumed unnatural food additives, anti biotics etc and well ... you could be eating your own bear. :HR:
