Found this belt of 7.62 at an online auction and wondered if its black tip AP ammo or just fmj with some age marks?
Bid is at $60 right now. Was thinking it would make a cool addition to my collection but was wondering what a realistic value would be.

The two most common NATO bullet tip colours are red for tracer and black for AP. There are a dozen others, including white for incendiary.

The story goes that the Vietnam snipers were unhappy with the available 7.62 ball, and switched to AP for two reasons. Heavier bullets gave better ballistic performance, and supposedly they were more consistent.

I take it this ammo would match any milsurplus with a steel core?

Steel cored surplus usually just has a mild steel core with a lead jacket clad in more mild steel that has been flash plated with copper. AP will have a heat treated high-carbon or tungsten core, usually in a proper gilding metal jacket.

it doesn't look clean to me . how was it stored ? either that's spider crap at the bottom of a case or corrosion. now that I have looked at the top of the bullets I see what looks like spider webbing . my question where was it stored ? I bought some 308 military stuff many years ago and I sold it to this guy and I had to make good on the sale because some of the rounds were Duds . and that would be machine gun ammo . on a belt . 34 rounds for $60 dollars . if you want it buy it . I like to know how stuff was stored . you could always pull the bullets and reload them . or safely display them . good luck in your choice .ps at $2 dollars a round it would go good in your collection

People not knowing the difference between steel core ammo and actual AP is one of my biggest annoyances in the shooting community. And then making up rules based on that makes it worse.
