Is this 8mm ammo correct for a husqvarna M96 8X57?

A pal of mine bought a husqvarna hunting rifle from Tradex. It's an 8X57 m96 commercial.

He bought some ammo for it at a local military surplus store that is marked '8X57 JS'. It says on the box that it is only for barrels with S - caliber bore 7.89mm, groove 8.20 mm.

I thought a 8mm mauser was actually 7.92mm.

I was wondering if anyone knew for sure if this ammo should or should not be used in his rifle.

That is the correct ammunition for a commercial m98. The JS ammo is .323".
Older 8x57 were .318". Most North American commercial JS ammo is loaded down just in case someone squeezes a .323 bullet down a .318 barrel, still, it is not a good idea. With your friends m98 you can safely use both both old and JS ammo, although accuracy with .318 bullets may be poor.

Go ahead with the ammo, no worries to have at all, as HVA never made rifles with a "J" (.318") barrel.
Then, while not something to do on purpose, P.O. Ackley and others made the proof that using a .323" bullet in a .318 bore in a robust rifle is not as dramatic as some may think, as long as the bullets allows deformation. I wouldn't try that in a Mauser '88, though.
