Or is it overkill, for a newbie.

I think its overkill.

You can do exactly what that thing can do for waaay less. I have a remy 700 in 308 that I bought off the EE for 700, put a 250 dollar HS precision stock on it, bedded it and put a scope on. All in the gun and scope cost me around 1600. Do some hand loading and you have a 1000 yard gun no problem, unless yer yankin the trigger.

But if ya got the money and it tickles yer fancy go for it, just know that you don't need that to do precision or long range shooting. Spend the money on yer scope.

That makes sense.

It's not much of a 'deal' for the $$... a little cheaper than buying all of the components and optics/mounts.
I would make sure it's just what you want first.
The deal killer for me would be the mildot reticle...good scope but better reticles are available.

Maybe i should just stick a decent scope on my ruger gunsite scout. Seems accurate enough with the open sights. From the youtube vids i watched, it can reach out there.

A gun is only as good as the barrel that is on it. two thousand dollar stocks and expensive bottom metal don't make a gun shoot any better. This is a corvette body with a Chevette engine and Walmart tires.

Way too much $$$$$$$. My friend bought a savage 10 fcp hs precision for a grand and with IVI match 168s we can hit a 12x12 inch gong at 1000m all day.
