Its not really a steal, a good sale though. I bought my 535 at that price, I think now the going price for what you describe is about $75 higher.

Never had an issue with mine, and it sees tons of usage. I would say they are the same for both reliability and ruggedness, and most people would probably say the difference is feel and handling.
 
i think the mossberg has a smoother action, i own two mossy 500 and soon to be mossy 590A1, and a remmy 870. Just my .02 cents, both are great shotguns...its like ford, chevy, dodge....pick your flavour.

They are good and well worth the money. The 870 has a steel receiver and the mossberg is aluminum, which makes it much lighter. The mossberg also has a tang safety (up top, slides forwards for fire) which I prefer very much as I am left handed. Many right handers prefer this style of safety as well.
 
I also prefer the tang safety. As for the price, well you've got 3 guns in 1 for $500, which is pretty good...You can't buy the barrels for that money...
 
I could go into my usual long spiel about how Mossberg is a better choice. But most of it has been said. As well as the forend release is in front of the trigger assembly. It annoys me. The Mossberg is behind and a lot easier and faster to work with. In total I've bought 3 Mossberg 500's for $205. They are easy to field strip and clean. And they just keep going and going. You probably won't be disappointed.
