Is this a good scope for this role?

Okay so I've done my homework on scopes, based on what's readily available in Canada and in my budget I've selected this scope.

It will be mounted on a 20" barrel full size .223 AR15. Typical ranges will be 75-150 yards, sometimes going out to 200yards where the range maxes out. I may end up mounting it on a Mini14 which can go into the bush so I can expect a top range of maybe 300 yards.

I like practicing tactical shooting scenarios from CQB stuff where a red dot is needed to bench shooting.

MK AR Mod 1 3-9X

MR AR Mod 1 3-9X Firedot

The two scopes above seems to be the same, the main difference being the illuminated reticle.

Can either of these two scopes be used effectively with both eyes open shooting techniques when using them close up?
Is the fire dot (illuminated reticle) necessary or beneficial when using both eyes open shooting technique?

What's your target? Medium game / human size? If so, maybe I'd stick with a 1-4x, maybe even a 1.5-6x. The low end lets you play in the CQB, and the high end gives you plenty of accuracy up to 200 yards. 300 yards is possible, but I prefer 3-9 for that.

In general though, I would stick with lower magnification. The Hilux/leatherwood CMR 1-4 is a decent offering, as well as the 1-4x version of the leupold mark AR.

No, in my opinion 3-9 is a poor choice for the application.
Have alook at the 1-4 offerings, where you can keep both eyes open for cqb. 4x is more than enough for 300 yards.

4x is even good for 500m, Service Shooters use 3.4X Elcans out to 500.

I like the Simmons Pro Diamond 1-4x. Meant for a slug gun, looks like a short dot, cheap, Great CQB Reticule.

While I would typically agree with the 1-4x being better I am also going to be buying a T1 for my other gun however I plan to set it up on an offset mount for whatever rig this scope will be on. The red dot should cover 1-75 yards and the scope for capability after that.

If were going 1-4 power the Leopuld Mark AR in 1-4x isn't a milldot reticle. Same thing for Leupolds other 1-4x offerings whether it be VR Patrol or MR/T series.

How are those reticles compared to say a mildot for further shooting? How is the milldot compared to those reticles for close up shooting?

image.jpgThis scope has a reticle designed for both in close and distance shooting. It also has a true 1x mag. It has great reviewsi but is new . Also made in China , if that matters. Like to add that the reticle designer , an American , says that this is the only 1x6 reticle designed for close range and long range precision .
