Is this acceptable for a "custom" job?

what do the back of the bolt lugs look like ( the only surface you haven't showed us)
That's the area that gets trued up so it gets full contact with the receiver.

I respect your choice and agree with not disclosing the smiths identity, giving an opportunity to rectify the issues. Make sure you give the entire rifle a good inspection before settling on anything. If there are even more issues I'd then think disclosure is appropriate to protect others from makin the same mistake.

That's not good at all, I would be going over the whole rifle and make sure everything you paid for is done right.

Heres pics of the back of the lugs, there was a lot of black junk that i wiped away on one side, not really highly polished more so like someone just cycled the action a few hundred times.

hmmm..........so gunsmith or gun plumber.............

So far from the pics you have posted I have some serious concerns.............mostly like just what was done and was was charged for.....

If by by black junk you mean lapping compound...............was the bolt handle installed with a hacksaw and tap and die set???

Yuk....that's not very nice at all......

It should be a surface free of any machining marks that is then lapped to a perfect contact finish. That's dog:bigHug::bigHug::bigHug::bigHug:.

Sorry about your luck, I would send it back and kindly ask them to fix it AND give the rest of the rifle a good once over before they sent it back as that type of work is unacceptable regardless of how much you paid to have the work done.

I had 2 issues in the past with gunsmiths, one handled it very well and I would have work done there again. The other didn't seem to think there was anything wrong with the sub-par work performed, needless to say he will never see another one of my rifles again. Live and learn.

I would NOT send that rifle back to them. Unless the guy was deathly sick and had his wife to the work or something...

I'm pretty far away from anything even remotely professional but all the work I do I make sure looks good and functions good. I would have set that bolt knob back further and then taken files and sanding belts to contour the bolt knob to the bolt handle, so it looked like it would be 1 smooth piece, then refinished it.

I wouldn't send it back.........I would just ask for most of the money to be refunded so that someone capable could fix it.

What does the barrel install look like???

After seeing those pictures I think you may have a small claims court case on your hand........an that the gunsmith does not deserve to remain anonymous anymore......that work....or lack of for that matter is utterly insulting given the $$ you shelled out to have it done.

f&^%*ing garbage! iv done better with a file and die set :/ i agree with not sending it back to him! demand that a huge portion of your money be returned so it can be sent to some one compitant to give the WHOLE gun a once over! and fix it.

That looks maybe a hair better than I'd do.

I'm a carpenter.

LOL!

That work is totally unacceptable. I hope this get straighten out (no pun intended) ASAP.

If not and that you have tried reasonable avenues in getting it fixed, do inform the rest of the board (within the limits of the rules) as to who did this hack job.

I'm curious to know the list of everything that was supposed to be included in that $1500.

so now you need to clarify a couple things..............
Did you buy the rifle after the work was done or did you send the parts in and have the work done?

If you bought that rifle as a custom rifle sight unseen then what you have there is a basement bubba job that someone flogged on the EE.......

Or you sourced all the parts and then had a basement bubba do assemble a custom job for you......

Either way.......it isn't what its supposed to be in our eyes of acceptable...........sold as is or done per your spec.........

Definitely unacceptable to ever leave any burrs/sharp edges like that on any machined part.

Do you have a part cost break down for the new barrel and so on?

I will say that $1,300+tax doesn't go very far. Although you probably didn't get as much as you were expecting, depending on component cost you might well have not gotten a whole lot less either.
