Is this acceptable for a "custom" job?

Another example of the crooks out there, seeing more and more of these supposed customs on the EE, everyone is building customs or calling guns customs with little to no work being done to them. I can't see any bolt work being done to this gun as the factory blueing is still on the bearing surface of the lugs. About the only thing custom on the action is that nasty bolt knob job. If it actually has a aftermarket barrel on it you may be able to get a competent gunsmith to true up the action and fix the knob for you for another few hundred dollars. But I wouldn't be surprised if it still has a factory barrel to go along with the factory action.

OUCH!!! And guys ask why we charge more than some others do for this sort of work. Ours do NOT look at all like that.
The only way 1 can fix that correctly now is to replace the bolt handle minimally.

Winter must be getting a bit long as I haven't seen this many pitch forks and torches in some time :)

There seems to be far more to this story then the opening post might suggest. Maybe more details will explain some of the shortcomings. maybe not????

This is not one of my projects so have no axe to grind or defend. It is certainly fun to jump on the band wagon and start slinging mud but just remember, if you offer professional services, your work will also be held under the microscope.

And some of it may not be as "custom" as you might have intended.

YMMV.

I bought the 700 action, Benchmark barrel chambered in .260 Remington, Tactical bolt handle, bolt work and had a muzzle brake threaded on. All parts but the muzzle brakes were supplied by the person that did the work. I'm getting a lot of PM's asking who it was. I do not plan on telling anyone who it was until I test fire the gun to make sure everything else is in good working order. I've talked to the guy and hes willing to do everything to make me happy. Definitely will be sending the bolt back, hopefully I can get a new replacement and not a cleanup of the botched job.

What other details would people like to know, other than the smith who did it. I'm sure hes watching this thread.

Do not just send the bolt back, send the whole rifle and ask him to go over the rifle from top to bottom and correct anything else that may need some attention! This is fair to both you and him, after that if there are still issues with the rifle, he has been given the opportunity to make things right, light him up like the fourth of July! Things like this sometimes slip through the cracks and I believe you should always give someone the benefit of the doubt and a chance to redeem themselves, if they blow that opportunity its open season.

Return the whole rifle there is zero custom work there dont mess around with him fixing it just get your money back and keep on truckin. Get a different rifle and then save up some cash and get a pro to do it. No matter what he dose too fix it youll allways be second guessing that rifle now.

Well after thinking about it long and hard and asking friends for advice, I decided to ask for a refund and send the work back. Hopefully that works out. I think next time I'll build another Savage myself, which I did for my last rifle and it turned out amazing.

Wow. That certainly is 'custom' work.

Why not get the smith to do the first few shots. For your safety.

Fugly.

I hope it works out for you nut if it doesn't please share the name of the 'gunsmith' so we can all be warned to stay away.

Just curious but, would any of the top known gunsmiths supply the donor rifle/action, fully accurize it, supply and chamber/muzzle thread a brand new barrel, put the knob on properly, doubt anyone would do that without bedding it though that wasn't mentioned, maybe some trigger work and whatever else so it's not a job half done... for $1,300?

What Tomochan said.

Though he seems inclined to work things out with you, I have a feeling that if this wasn't for the fact that it was brought up on CGN and that he may well be following this thread, that he wouldn't have been so inclined.

Why do I think this?

Because that rifle actually made it out of this shop. Plain and simple. If it did, then either he had an apprentice do the work and he didn't quality controlled it and/or it's the best work he can do..

How lame....Did you honestly expect you could create a thread like this and not give out the name of the smith/shop?!!
You're such a tease!
It's like telling your friends how hot your new gf is and refusing to show a picture!!

:D

So nobody else gets screwed you may as well say who the gunsmith was so EVERYONE can avoid them...........just how we all avoid certain retailers because they are scummy cheats.
