Hey CGN,

My brother in law came across this ammo that is marked non-corrosive, but I'd like your opinions. I've read on a few other threads that all crate ammo from China is corrosive and some vendors are selling stuff not knowing weather it truly is or not. They just sell it as it is labelled and shipped to them. I think it was a thread with Wolverine that was pulling some ammo off the shelves because this was the issue. What do you think?

If it comes in a spam can, treat it as corrosive. If you really want non-corrosive you're stuck with MFS or Barnaul. You'll know the difference as it costs twice as much...

It's definitely corrosive, i had the same crate from lever rust out my SKS, so learn from my mistakes!

Yep I agree that is corrosive. I just picked up a crate of the same stuff and at some point I will do a nail test. I am treating it as 100% corrosive. When I get around to doing it I will post my results.

Where do we find info on this nail test.Reason I ask I bought some Romanian ammo that I have no idea on.It comes in 20 round boxs.

Pull the bullt, dump the powder and just put a few nails into a peice of wood. Then lower the now empty shell over the nail and fire the primer by hand, usually leave 1 nail alone, fire 1 known non corrosive on a seperate nail, then a few of the ones you are testing each on their own nail.

This early 70's chinese ammo if tough to do this with though as not all of it is corrosive. Of the crate i had the first 400 or so rounds were completely non corrosive, but then the rest were corrosive, so you never know when you're going to get one or the other.

Do you believe that every spam can of ammo sold from Norinco is corrosive? Just ordered 1040 in 308 W from Wanstall"s.

The 7.62x51 is new enough production that i have never heard of any corrosive crates of it, but 7.62x39 wasn't made non corrosive untill the mid 90's, all these green crates are 1970-1972 that i have seen.
My guess is they tested non corrosive at the time, but didn't pay enough attention and it all got mixed in with corrosive, which brings us to the present situation.

Safe bet would be to assume any com-block surplus ammo is corrosive..as already pointed out.
If you dont want to pull bullets to do the nail test..this other option should work if you have steel cased ammo...although the nail test is better.

Fire off your rounds..and grab some of the steel casings. Look inside of them soon after shooting and examine the steel and put them aside. Clean your gun as if corrosive was used. The next day, re-examine the interior of your spent shells. Ive noticed rust forming within 24 hrs. Even better if you can compare them to some known non corrosive spent shells..which will still be shiny and clean inside. Worked for me :)

Norinco 7.62x39 says non corrosive on each box, should this also be treated as corrosive ammo?
