I came across this picture while browsing through a slideshow called "30 years of the Iran revolution" or something like that. In this picture people were requested to hand in their weapons, I see an MG42 in that pile I think. Who the hell turns one of those beauties in? I hope they weren't destroyed!

Likely an Iranian HK MG3. Iran was licensed by HK to make small arms under the Shah regime.

They probably were not destroyed, just stock piled to arm the poor buggers they used as cannon fodder in Iran Iraq War in 1980 to 1988. Why arm them with modern weapons when you know they are just going to die wasting up enemy bullets?

Indeed, Iran's MIO had production rights for HG3 for quite some time. There is a small chance it could be a Zastave made M-53, Yugoslavians were rather busy exporting their goods to both sides during the bloddy Iraq-Iran war (1980-1988).

look closely at the stock. It is not that of an m53, and i do not believe a mg42 stock either. There is a slight radius difference of the curve on the lower portion of the stock, I'm guessing mg3.
