Is this buffer wear normal?

Hey guys... I have a question regarding buffer wear and tear on my new AR15. It hasn't had any rounds through it yet. When I received it, it didn't have any wear on the buffer. The wear started showing up after practicing with it around the house. It seems to be gradually getting worse. I haven't had this kind of wear on any of my other AR's... even ones with a decent round count.

Cheers

Look at the wear on my C7, This is normal...

It certainly is not normal. You either have a burr on the back of your bolt carrier ( a minor issue) or your carrier is hitting the buffer retaining pin on every cycle ( a significant problem). The buffer should never touch the retainer pin except when the receiver is opened for disassembly. That C7 should not be showing that kind of internal damage, and neither should the OPs rifle.

This is not normal. It looks like the buffer may have been striking the buffer retaining pin. Make sure the bolt carrier rest on the buffer when the upper is close onto the lower. If not, the rifle needs to go back to the factory.

Last time I saw this defect in a colt LE6920. The upper receiver bbl extension was too long and the bgc sits far too deep into the receiver.

Thanks for the replies. I'm getting conflicting answers everywhere. KAC said it was normal and being caused from "repeatedly opening the upper/lower receiver." Most people I ask say it's not normal.

I've checked for burs on the back of the bolt carrier. It's nice and smooth.

The bolt carrier does rest on the buffer and slightly pushes it in. Here's a pic of when they make contact.

It will push it when it cams against the buffer. However, what you need to test is whether or not the bolt carrier has play when the receiver is closed and the bolt is in battery.

my colt m4 has absolutely no wear on the buffer after shooting 400 rounds. By practicing you mean racking the charging handle? that sure wouldn't put enough force on the buffer to mark it like that, are there markings on the bcg?

I'd say its more a function of the buffers finish then anything else. Some have a clear coat over the anodizing, that's what you see wearing. I have a few that have it and they a develop that ring. Other ones without that don't show any wear

yah that sounds like the most likely explanation.
