Is this considered a gun safe or case?

Because if it's considered as a gun safe it's legal to store the gun without trigger lock right?

I may be wrong, but I believe that law states that for Restricted firearms, you need 2 locks between the weapon and anyone wanting to use it, so you would still need a trigger lock on the pistols and they would have to be unloaded.

I always thought a vault was a big thing like at a bank or a secured gun room with a lock, a safe is a smaller thing for personal and home useage, tho I could be wrong.

Restricted and prohibited firearms

* Attach a secure locking device so the firearms cannot be fired and lock them in a cabinet, container or room that is hard to break into; or
* Lock the firearms in a vault, safe or room that was built or modified specifically to store firearms safely.
* For an automatic firearm, also remove the bolt or bolt carrier (if removable) and lock it in a separate room that is hard to break into.

Don't forget to count the lock on your front door :D My interpretation is if the handgun is in a locked "Recepticle" it has to have a trigger lock on it, but it if it is in a "safe" or "vault" no trigger lock is required and you can store a charged magazine in the safe. I don't think there is any circumstances where it is legal to store a gun loaded.

What I was wondering, what if you custom fitted a safe similar to the one in the picture so that a post ran through the trigger guard and then the top of the post connected to the lid. When you open the lock it also disengage a lug that keys into the post, making it a separate locking system that just happens to share the same keying mechanism. If this is not “separate” enough, either a remote electronic key for the post lock or a separate biometric pad. the pistol would also be fitted into the foam.

I would assume that if it is easily portable, that it would likely be considered a case. If it's not reasonably portable, it's a vault.

I don't think the size is the issue. If it was secured or bolted down, I'd say you've got no problems. However, if the manufacturer considers it a case you're SOL.

I would tend to believe it is a vault. It is marketed as a vault. also I think Scottie hit the head on the nail. (I would also keep the packaging that said it was a vault. So if it ever came into a legal question, you have proof that it was marketed as a vault)
Lock the firearms in a vault, safe or room that was built or modified specifically to store firearms safely.

I added the quotes

The wording in the Act is clear if taken literally. If it says safe or vault on it or in the accompaning paperwork you should be covered. Pretty easy case to make- you are complying with the spirit and the letter of the law.

If you are in the market for a safe so you can store with ammo and sans trigger lock for cheap check out Canadi@n Tire. All props go out to Echo4Lima for the idea, but they have a small safe that works nicely. It is a Garrison EA20. It has an electronic key pad and a backup key lock. Costs ~$50 and bolts down to whatever you want. I did like E4L and bolted mine to the studs in the closet wall- secure and out of sight. Best of all it has "electronic safe" right on the front cover so it meets the standard. I wish it was slightly bigger inside but other than that it is worth a look. It is nice to have ammo right there with the pistol yet secure and legal. Sure is quick to access albeit noisy due to the keypad beeping as you key the code. ;)

I agree about the noisy key pad, I am going to replace the cylinder lock with something a bit better (I know a locksmith) and also de-solder that little speaker on the circut board, or at the least. place a few layers of duct tape over it. I will post some 'how-to' pics if you wish...

For those who haven't seen it,

Ruger P-85 (uber reliable), 147 gr. Golden Sabers, two mags and a SureFire 6P in the closet....

That's for all the replies guys.

I just think that a safe/vault is much needed for all gunnutz, considering you can store loaded mags in it and take the trigger lock off the gun which makes it much faster to lock & load when zombies are running towards you. ;)

Geez & only held in by one measly screw...

Actually, there are four, this first one was for the placement. There is another beside it and two more above it. Two are into the studs and two into the backing I put there when I renovated the room and installed the backing for closet organizer. The screws are #14 Wood screws, 4" long. If you destroyed the organizer to give you access to the safe, you could hang off of it with all your weight, I know, I did it. It should by all means exceed the regs for storage. Having it within the organizer makes it that much harder to access or use levers and tools to defeat it. Oh, the shelf below, BTW is not just on those support pins, it is also glued and screwed.

Thanks for the tip about the Canadian Tire safe, picked one up today for the Glock 17 that I'm going to buy once my restricted PAL gets here... the bolts from my SKS and a few other non-restricted weapons will live here too until I spring the $400 or so for a gun safe from LeBaron...

If someone has successfully disabled the speaker please explain the process!

Cheers,
Mike
