found this revolver
its in the US according to the serial number and research that i have done it appears to be manufactured after 1898
but the guy got a letter directly from colt saying that it was only shipped in December of 1898 and according to him that makes it a pre 1898 revolver. Now that may be the case in the states but is it also the case here?
i will talk to cfo tommorrow but in the meantime i have attached a picture of the letter.
what do you guys th

In USA Is antique for sure made before 1899. As for here in my opinion answer would be no. Simply cause to be considered an antique it has to be made before 1898 so on or before dec 1897. That's the difference. If it was shipped in dec 1898 then it would have to be made earlier that year. As far as I know..,

actually it could very well be a antique ....... because it is based off of when the gun was built , NOT shipped .

who knows how long it was sitting on a shelf after it was built waiting to be shipped .

but given the shipping date is after 1898 , you are going to need some sort of written proof it was built before 1898 .

edit ......

did a quick google search and it appears that it was made around the same time it was shipped ...... according to one serial number list , it wasn't built untill the very begining of 1899 ....

Please view the SAA serial numbers in our Antique database project - Click Here.

If i'm seeing this correctly it's #116###, definetly antique.

This was made prior to 1898, 1885 to be exact, and shipping date doesn't matter so much as manufacture date. The problem you could have is with the CFC/RCMP and customs. The CFC when issuing antique letters have been said to be asking for factory documentation, this letter in their eyes could very well provide proof of post 1898 manufacture. With customs you can't blame them for not knowing the difference between manufacture and ship dates, if they see 1898 written on that letter to them it's 1898.

Make very certain that this is either serial number matching, or that at the very least the frame carries the pre-1898 serial number. The frame is the firearm, other parts could be non matching and that doesn't matter in the slightest.

Its not a SAA, its a New Navy. SAA serials are irrelevant.

Hahaha, I'm so out of it apparently.

I take it all back, my apologies. Well the new army navy serials are in that thread as well if you'd like to go view the serial range for your own shopping records. BTW OP there are some lovely New Army Navy in the EE currently.

Now I'll go back to school and take remedial english and reading comprehension skills, lol.

yah there are some lovely revolvers in the EE but the prices are a little steep.
the one i was looking at in the US is listed at 650.00 thats half the price of one on this side of the line.

There is a reason for that, this one you were interested in not being antique is of course one of them ;).

Add in shipping, insurance, border duties and taxes, and the fact that most on here allow for a return if grossly misrepresented (within a reasonable amount of time, such as three days of receipt) and the value is there. The $650 advertised price is never landed cost.

The ones on the EE right now are offered by a good seller, and he seems to be willing to haggle. Most North Americans have forgotten how to haggle, he's started his pricing high for this very reason. Send an offer on one of those .41colt DA, worst he can say is no. Well maybe he can say worse, but you're able to take it :).

The New army navy is routinely misrepresented by US sellers and quite often requires work to get into proper shooting shape, be aware of this when shopping around. They look at these pieces as collectors items and small (or in some cases large) details can be over looked, where as we want shooters up here for the most part and such details over looked add up quick.
