Is this good enough accuracy for deer?

Rifle; SSG-69

Norma brass, F210 primers, 48.1gr H380, 165 Sierra game king.

I know H380 does not give the best velocity ( I didn't chrono this yet) but this rifle likes it.

Think I'll whip up some more, and try my luck at longer ranges.....

The rifle's obviously good to go, so it's simply a question of how well you can shoot it in from the stances that you're likely to encounter hunting. I know that I don't have to tell you that, but it's funny to see how many people at the range with the big bores before the season are happy if their shots simply hit the 100m target while shooting from the bench, and don't even try from any other position that they'll actually use.

Might I ask what kind of rifle you fired that group from?

Ain't it interesting that five .308 cal bullets can produce a .113 inch group...

Oh, I know how fast weather, lighting, etc and most impotantly the shooter can open up a group and I am by no means any kind of expert at any. Still it was cool to watch the groups shrink as I worked through the load development and then open up again once I got past the sweet spot.

I hope that load is repeatable for me, until now my best accuracy with this gun has been with lighter bullets, in the 125-130gr range.

Might I ask what kind of rifle you fired that group from?

It'll work as a deer gun but only at close range.

Steyr's SSG 69 faced off in USA in 1986-87 with the rifle that would become the M24 in the final round of the process to select the US Army's new sniper rifle. It was narrowly beaten by the Remington Model 700, but only in the distances beyond 600 meters. Within that distance, both rifles produced same sub-minute-of-angle accuracy.

If you look real close you can see the powder burns

If your rifle can do that at 100 you should be fine, if you keep, your shots to a km or so
