Hunting big game with a centerfire rifle I believe 5 shells is law. With a rifled barrel shotgun and slugs only its 3 shells. What can be expected if I use 5 slugs as when hunting bears I don't want to become a meal. Is the fine much or will game officers be ok with that.

Migratory bird hunting is 3 rounds.

Hunting is provincial, IIRC
In Ontario the round restrictions are just the federal firearms restrictions
ie 5 centerfire semi auto, unlimited for everything else.

Holy cow, is there a question in there somewhere? :D

If hunting bear you need to follow the hunting regulations, no ifs ands or buts.

Shotgun is 2 in the tube and one in the chamber.

depends province to province, but i think for the shotgun your confusing the migratory bird regs (federal) with provincial hunting regs.

upland game, big game are the provinces jurisdiction so you should be good to go with 5.

Depends on your province, but seeing as you're in Ontario, 3 is the limit for hunting with a shotgun. Rifle is only limited to 5 bullets if it is a center fire semi-auto. Any other action, the sky is the limit. For bear protection you can have as many as the gun will hold, but for hunting with a shotgun in Ontario, regardless of the animal........3 is the limit.

you cannot hunt big game in southern ontario with a centerfire rifle.

the five centerfire ammo restriction is not a hunting regulation, and only applies to semi's. The three shells in a hunting regulation, not sure what the fine is, but I doubt the game wardens will be okay with it.

you have to look up the hunting regs....

IN BC up until a couple years ago any shotgun hunting was 2 rounds. they recently added an exclusion allowing no limit for slugs.

I'm unaware of any BC hunting rifle restrictions, other then federal laws, 5 shots for semi autos.

in BC:
It is unlawful to hunt with a set gun, or to hunt wildlife with a
pump, repeating or auto-loading shotgun with a magazine capable
of holding more than two shells. Where the use of a shotgun is
allowed for hunting or trapping big game, an unplugged shotgun
holding more than 2 shells and firing single projectiles only (slugs) may
be used.

This is in the firearms Politics section..............why again?

In Ontario there are no hunting regulations that limit the magazine capacity of a rifle. There are federal regulations that limit magazine capacity in semi-automatic centrefire rifles and shotguns.

In Ontario the regulation requires magazines be plugged to permit no more than two for all shotgun hunting. If you have 5 in your shotgun while hunting anything including bear the COs will not be okay with that.

I believe in Manitoba you can have unlimited in your pump shotgun. I would confirm that before I went out with 9 slugs in an 870 though.

I guess it depends on what you consider southern ontario.

BS, 100% legal here. Check your regs...

Depends on you definition of Southern Ont. Take a map of Ont...draw a line straight West from Kingston to Lake Huron.

Are there any WMU's south of that line, that permits centerfire rifle for big game? I couldn't find any.

If the bear is close enough to worry you and you can't hit it in three shots, may I suggest investing in one of these >>> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hhstuvzMiB0&feature=related

I wonder if they do them in .410 as well for some of those hard to get grouse or even better...belt fed??
