Is this legal

I go bear hunting with a string, bow and a pointy stick, so I think your 3 slugs should be plenty. Ontario COs do check shotguns regularly so I would think they mind.

just called a natural resources office in N-B and they said that the 2 round limit only applies to migratory birds. He said that there in no mag limit for pumpaction shotguns on varmints, partridge, deer etc..

dem black bears in Ontario are quite an adversary:p

there is caliber restrictions in S Ontario, some WMA dont have open rifle season for big games cause the only big game there is white tail deer, if you are planning to hunt bear you will most likely end up in the area where there are no caliber restrictions anyway

and its the hunting reg that no shotgun is to hold more then 3 rounds, really blackies are not that hard to kill nor they are as agressive as brawnies

Here's my question....
If it has a rifled barrel, and is shooting a single projectile, isn't it a 12 gauge _rifle_ ?

The fact that shotshells are available for it makes as much difference as the fact that shotshells are available for .22rf

Depends on you definition of Southern Ont. Take a map of Ont...draw a line straight West from Kingston to Lake Huron.

Are there any WMU's south of that line, that permits centerfire rifle for big game? I couldn't find any.

going by the MNR the southern Ontario border is much more north than what i've always been told. that is assuming that both southwestern and southeastern can be grouped together as southern...

"...you cannot hunt big game in Southern Ontario with a centerfire rifle..." Nonsense. Everything South of the French River is considered to be Southern Ontario. Depends entirely on the WMU.
The Ontario MNR has decided shotguns can have 3 rounds only in the firearm. Get caught with 5 and you'll be charged under the Fish and Wildlife Conservation Act. Plus lose your shotgun, your hunting licence and the CO can confiscate everything you have with you, including your vehicle.
"...isn't it a 12 gauge _rifle_ ?..." Yes, but a shotgun with a rifled barrel is still considered to be a shotgun in 'shotguns only' areas. Asked the MNR a few years back. Logic, of course, has nothing to do with it.

Damn.. I must have been breaking the law for the last 15 years then.. maybe you should check a map to actually see where southern ontario is.. (49, 48, 47, 53, yadda, yadda, yadda.. No moose shot with rifles in those MNU's ;) )

Northern Ontario does not start just north of the GTA..

Ah, so if I come to Ontario, I should make sure I have some shotshells for my bolt-action .30-'06 shotgun.

funny thing is.. the official wildlife act does not define what a shotgun is.. so it would be open to interpretation by a judge (citing what ever official referensce etc..).. and you know which way that would go..
