Definitely not a calf, in my opinion as the moose pictured has an adult proportioned head. If you only had a calf tag this is "not" the moose for you.

Do you think it's a calf or a yearling? The photos aren't the best as they were taken from some distance away. My dilemma when I spotted this animal was that I couldn't decide if it was a calf or yearling. It's difficult to judge without a nearby cow to compare it to. A calf I could shoot but a yearling wasn't an option. Anyway being unsure I passed on the shot and took a couple of photos instead. I subsequently sent the photos to a C.O. I know and he had a MNR biologist look at them. The biologist did positively identify it and I now know which it is. Being unsure whether it was a calf or yearling I know I made the right decision not to shoot but if I had would I have killed a calf or a yearling. I will identify it later if this thread gets traction. Calf or yearling?

If your not sure if it's a calf. then it's not a calf!
I have been hunting moose for 36 years and I see a young cow in that picture. Sure I could be wrong, but the time to find out is not when it's down and the MNR come along to see what has been shot.

You did the right thing, and got a nice picture. It's all part of the hunting process, and I have learned much from the ones I had to watch and let walk away.

Not legal here in any case as we are in a bull only area where antlers must be a length of 4" or greater. That said, the long face suggests an adult cow.
