I've been looking at buying my first rifle and I'm pretty much dead set on a Mosin Nagant M91/30. I found one at a local store for $400. It has a laminate stock, all the serials match, has never been re-arsenalled, no dents in the stock, no marks on the metal, Comes with the bayonet and all other extras, and a 440 round spam can of ammo. Can any one tell me if this is a good deal? Should I be jumping on this ASAP?

You should ask the forum moderators for access to the "Equipment Exchange" section, and in there you have a lot of comparables; it helps in such situations.

Figure the gun is worth between $150 and $200, then a about $200 for the ammo; That's my humble opinion!

How's the bore looking? Ideally, you want a bright bore with sharp, welll defined rifling, slightly frosty between the land is ok since its pretty common with old military rifle, but should not be heavily pitted. If good i would say go for it, you have a good kit to get started:)

Mosins are at an all time low for this century, not because they're poor quality, but because there are so many. Westrifle has them for as low as 110 bucks for a shooter grade 91/30. There is presently surplus ammo on the market for a good price, as well as MFS and good commercial ammunition for hunting and target, in multiple bullet weights. The 7.62x54R bullet feeds many rifles; 91/30s, M44, SVT-40, ect. ect.

In English; Mosins are here to stay. Its not just a fad. I would recommend a Mosin 91/30 for any shooter, new to shooting or new to hunting. Its cheap to shoot and is big enough for any North American big game animals. Mosins are a big part of history and when they are sold out, there will be no more.

If anyone is considering a Mosin, the time is now. You will never see the rifles or ammo these prices again.

I agree mosins are underrated but excellant rifles I have killed 1 cow moose and one whitetail buck with one of my mosins. try the mfs ammo it works great and is not corrosive. The PRVI ammo is outstanding and the brass is better still. mine likes 4350 and 180gr bullets. but I haven't tried 150 or 123 yet.

The gun must be very good for that price as you can buy the ammo for 180.00 or less so the gun adds up to 220.00.

Unless the gun is borderline perfect I think it is too much money, and if it is perfect I am not sure I would shoot it as shooters are so cheap to buy right now.

I never looked at the bore but the rest of the rifle was flawless. Also, can any one suggest a good store to go to in the Stony Plain area? Most of the places I call in Edmonton don't have anything to do with these rifles.

Reznov we have rifles and ammo on our site www.westrifle.com Also we just brought LVE ammunition to Canadian Market (lveplant.ru) We can ship by DHL both ammo and rifle. Canada Post Strike does not affect us.
Anyway we have good prices and many people are happy with our service. Go check out our website.

Reznow - that's probably a fair deal depending on condition of the bore and barrel. A crate of 880 rounds of ammo can be bought for $300 plus shipping, those spike bayonets are cheap like borscht, the little extras (double ammo pouch, cleaning kit, oiler, etc) are usually part of any Mosin purchase. Laminate stocks are a bit more, Russian all matching - no Finnish marks might be worth more to some. Again all depends upon condition. As recommended check the EE.

One thing make sure you check the muzzle to see if its nicked or otherwise damaged from improper cleaning. Finns counterbored the muzzles to fix such problems. A damaged muzzle affects accuracy.

At 110 bucks each, I'm wondering how many rifles come in a crate?

Further to ammunition, what does it cost to ship a crate of 880 rounds to Edmonton?

It all depends where in Edmonton? Give us a postal code and we will tell you exact cost of shipping. I would say 40-50.
